Do you want to know something scary? As millions around the world, and surely in the USA, prepare to distribute chocolate candy during Halloween, it's important to remember that over 700,000 tons of cocoa waste (equivalent to 220,000 African elephants) is produced annually. A shocking 75% of the cacao fruit ends up wasted during chocolate production. 👻 That’s a haunting amount of waste! 👻 Not all is horribly awful. With smarter use of cacao byproducts like the husk, pulp, and bean shell, we can support farmers, restore degraded landscapes, create food, and even generate clean energy. 💀 Mind you – this is just the cocoa for chocolate. This does not account for the amount of wrappers and packaging wasted. On this Halloween, rethink your consumption. Check out our article on how chocolate can be more sustainable https://bit.ly/3I0IUNY #Waste #Halloween #Data #Chocolate #NoWaste #Consumption #CircularEconomy

☕️ICYMI: Starbucks just announced they are removing the surcharge on plant-based milks starting Nov 7. Why does this matter? On average, plant-based milks have a significantly smaller carbon footprint than dairy milk and most compare favorably on water use. Some plant-based milks are also good sources of protein. ⏭️Swipe below to see our breakdown Read the announcement: bit.ly/3UuU18D Learn more about how the food and beverage industry can encourage sustainable consumer behavior: bit.ly/4hj8KgF

🇬🇧 More than 30 food business in the UK have written to the environment secretary calling for mandatory reporting of wasted food. 🗑️ This is important, since roughly 1/3 of the food produced globally is thrown away, squandering resources and labor at a cost of almost £22bn annually to the UK economy. Compulsory reporting will force companies to confront the reality of how much they produce and what happens to it. This call for action aligns with the #Champions123 coalition's Target-Measure-Act approach to reducing food loss and waste. Kudos to Too Good To Go for leading on this letter and to Champions Tesco and Nestlé for signing on. Encouraging ‘meat-free Fridays’ by the UK Catholic church in 2011 motivated 28% of British Catholics to reduce their meat consumption. This saved around 55,000 tons of carbon emissions annually, equal to avoiding 82,000 trans-Atlantic flights. Recent research in Rwanda showed that 83% of faith organizations surveyed considered food loss and waste to be a relevant problem for their organizations and were able to identify ways to tackle the issue. These are examples of how closely tied our food consumption is to our personal beliefs and social values. “Our faith tells us that sustainable consumption, food and spirituality are inextricably linked,” says Jasjit Singh, Professor in Religion and Society at the University of Leeds and a leader in the Sikh community in our recent story: https://bit.ly/4e3bJH2. Faith groups from all denominations are stepping up to tackle the world’s food and climate crises, proving that spiritual values can inspire real-world change. From promoting plant-based diets rooted in religious traditions to reducing food waste, faith communities are transforming how we produce and consume food. These efforts are only scratching the surface. Ready to see how faith is driving sustainable food systems? 💡 Read our blog: https://bit.ly/4e3bJH2 👉🏼 Interested in this topic? ❓ What are scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions? 🚚🏙️Scope 1 refers to direct GHG emissions from sources that a company owns or controls. These emissions typically occur on-site, such as the combustion of diesel used for driving a truck or the burning of coal to generate electricity. 🔌⚡️Scope 2 refers to indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat and cooling. For example, an electricity user’s scope 2 emissions would be the scope 1 emissions of the power generating company. 📦🏭Scope 3 refers to indirect emissions from a company’s upstream and downstream activities. They occur outside a company’s control and are associated with its value chain. ➡️ Learn more about greenhouse gas accounting: https://bit.ly/4dAaKxM

Gathering decision-makers in Cali, Columbia for #COP16 provides a unique opportunity for countries to take tangible action to protect biodiversity. 📈 The global food system will be a huge part of these conversations, as it is the single biggest driver of biodiversity loss. 🍎 Reducing food loss and waste and shifting towards more plant-rich diets in high income countries will be important solutions to feed more people without converting more forests and natural landscapes into farms. What exactly would a successful COP look like? Read insights from WRI's Food, Land and Water Global Director Crystal Davis: https://bit.ly/4hhK4oO

Did you know that food production is responsible for as much as 25% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions? Shifting towards more plant-rich foods can make a substantial difference. That’s why we've teamed up with the World Resources Institute (WRI) to bring the Coolfood Pledge to healthcare facilities across Europe. Together, we are committed to cutting GHG emissions linked to food served in healthcare facilities and reducing its impact on the climate. Through the Coolfood Pledge, participants have the opportunity to: 🌱 Adopt science-based reduction targets for food-related emissions. 🌱 Track, calculate, and reduce their emissions. 🌱 Access best practices and support. 🌱 Receive personalised feedback. Ten healthcare facilities across Europe – representing 9 million meals annually – have already signed the Coolfood Pledge so far, reducing food-related GHG emissions by 7% per plate since 2015.
