🇩🇰 The city of Copenhagen is leading the way on cutting their food-related GHG emissions. What are they doing differently? 👇 🔹They took matters into their own hands and decided to change the food served in their public kitchens, amounting to 115,000 meals every day! 🔹The city reduced the number of meals with meat on their menus, leading to a 52% reduction in beef purchases and a 20% reduction of pork, and substituted these items with plant-based protein sources. 🔹By 2024, the city had reduced their food procurement emissions by 25%, a target that they had not expected to reach until 2025! Copenhagen joined the Coolfood Pledge in 2019, World Resources Institute's initiative to curb diet-related greenhouse gas emissions. 🥕 Restaurants and food service providers have the potential to lead the fight in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the hospitality sector. Today at London Climate Action Week, we partnered with The Food Foundation and The Sustainable Restaurant Association to talk about about opportunities to bring this potential to life! (Head of Coolfood, Edwina Hughes gives you the highlights 👇 )

Let’s Transform the World One Meal at a Time!! Today at the London Climate Action Week, we hosted a transformative Coolfood breakfast with partners of the The Food Foundation and The Sustainable Restaurant Association. Restaurants and other food service providers came together to discuss innovative strategies for reducing climate emissions in the food and hospitality sector. Juliane Caillouette Noble, from the Sustainable Restaurant Association, brought great discussion points: 🟢 Climate change affects restaurant supply chains; we have to plan for that. 🟢The food chain, from farm to fork, is responsible for a quarter of emissions. 🟢No road to net zero bypasses restaurants and food systems. 🟢Scope 3 emissions account for 90% of food service business emissions. And Chloe MacKean, Business Engagement Manager at The Food Foundation, highlighted key elements: 🟢Focus on the health and nutrition of sustainable foods, not just processed alternatives. 🟢Targets need to be set, ideally sales-based, to drive meaningful change. Edwina Hughes, Head of Cool Food at WRI Food, finished with ways to make the change that is needed to happen: 🟢Food is a critical pillar of climate action. 🟢CoolFood promotes positive change through dietary shifts. 🟢The CoolFood Playbook offers guidance based on behavioural science to help food businesses. 🟢Consumers make food decisions in seconds; we must make sustainable choices easier. 🟢73% of UK consumers believe adopting sustainable foods is urgent.
