I’ve been passionate about the mental health field since a young age. I am so excited to be working with Rising Hope Counseling in Scotland and bringing therapy services to our rural community. Life happens. I believe that no matter what happens, there is a way to work through it. There is HOPE! Starting your counseling journey is a brave first step to making positive changes in your life.

Welcome! I have immediate availability. I'm a licensed mental health counselor at MK Counseling in Sioux Falls, SD. I've been practicing for approximately eight years and love what I do. My approach involves using clinically researched methods to help clients make meaningful life changes and find workable strategies for dealing with their thoughts and feelings. Unfortunately, there's no magic involved in the counseling process, and making changes takes effort from both of us and a willingness to try something new. I'm committed to putting in the effort, tracking our progress, and building collaborative relationships with my clients.

Seeking support for yourself or a child can feel challenging. My hope is to assist you in navigating this process. When working with clients, I draw from a client-centered approach and utilize skills and techniques that best fit each client and their needs. I believe each client is the expert of their life and I strive to provide a supportive and accepting space we can explore change.

Finding the right counselor can often be a daunting task, one that many clients attempt once and never again. Although I'm sure I'm not the right counselor for everyone, I hope to (at the very least) provide you with a positive experience on the benefits of counseling. I promise to create a safe space for you to voice your presenting concerns via active listening, empathy, and encouragement so that the thoughts can stop playing mental tennis in your mind. Together, we will find solutions to your presenting concerns and supply you with the adequate skills for your long-term success.

With 10+ yrs. as a licensed therapist and 15+ yrs. working in the human services field, I have assisted many individuals, couples, and families through life’s challenges. I have extensive experience working in a variety of settings. Settings have included private practice, non-profit organizations, in-home therapy, therapeutic group homes, and juvenile & adult detention centers. I believe in a holistic approach to wellness in which a healthy mind, body, and soul lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. I look to strengthen the core of each individual and couple to be able to strive, not just survive, through difficult moments.

I once worked with a client who said "Life is like the Hokey Pokey; sometimes you feel in, and other times you feel out...and we all need to turn ourselves around once in a while". Through my 20 years in behavioral health I've found my passion helping those that need a little "turning around". My skill set has been developed working with individuals, couples, and families of all ages within the school, inpatient, and outpatient settings. My door has always been open to any individual seeking comfort, reassurance, validation, and progress. I work with clients to identify troublesome issues, set goals, and create action plans.

I am a Licensed Counselor based in Sioux Falls, SD. I am a therapist who approaches therapy from a relational, collaborative, and strength-based perspective. I have extensive experience working with adults and adolescents who have experienced trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, and challenges in adjusting to recent life changes. I value the therapeutic relationship and focus on the resiliency of the client to create a firm foundation on which to achieve change. I find great worth in aiding the client to find their OWN voice to promote healing and wellness. I am currently accepting new clients.

I see the counseling space as an intentional time to process life — to be heard and feel validated. I identify primarily as a person-centered counselor, maintaining a congruent and empathic approach, all while viewing clients as capable experts on themselves. I also recognize the difficult times that we currently live in and acknowledge how systems and circumstances greater than ourselves can contribute to daily distress. I also enjoy exploring life’s larger, existential questions and helping clients find their own meaning in life.

Kathryn has worked with youth since 2014 in a variety of programs including residential settings, education, early childhood, and counseling centers. Kathryn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Concordia College Moorhead and a Master of Science in Counseling and Student Affairs from Minnesota State University Moorhead. She obtained her Associate of Social Work license in 2018 and is currently working towards her Licensed Professional Counselor hours in South Dakota.

My niche is working with ages 2-18, however I have a passion for working and helping all ages! I love being able to support people through their journeys, no matter what their journey looks like and what step they're on.

I’m glad that you are here and taking the first step. It is my goal to make this process less intimating and more predictable. You can expect therapy to be messy, uncomfortable, and challenging at times. However, it balances with healing and can be so freeing. Many of my clients worry that people will reject or abandon them. They struggle with relationships (platonic or romantic) or feel like they can’t seem to have a healthy relationship no matter what they try. They often feel “different’ or disconnected from others or think that others do not understand them. They have trouble relying on family and friends or asking for help.

I am available for counseling sessions at Rising Hope in Aberdeen, or online through our Telehealth platform. As a Clinical Social Worker/Therapist, MSW, CSW, QMHP, and on track to be EMDR certified, I'm here to offer a safe space for your journey towards healing and self-discovery. I am here to offer you guidance, support, or simply a listening ear. I strive to find and apply the best mental health treatments suitable for each individual. I want to help YOU help yourself through this process.

I strive to be available for clients that are looking for acceptance, care and therapeutic insight. My goal is to walk with individuals that desire to know more about themselves and can ultimately become their own therapist, to know themselves fully and completely, as anyone can. As any human, you may struggle with interpersonal relationships and/or the inner workings of self. We all have a journey to experience and a story to tell about it. I am here to help navigate the journey, identify the adventure, and tell the story.

Individuals seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Parents may be looking for assistance for their child as they are demonstrating behaviors. Couples may be struggling to communicate in their marriage. Individuals going through a divorce may need parent coordination to assist them in coordinating visitation. Each situation requires a therapist who is understanding and willing to see how they are being impacted individually. Clients are seeking help and wanting results.

I work with teens, adults, and couples to navigate challenges as they journey through what it means to be the best versions of themselves. When we are up against confusing or difficult circumstances, we are left with a choice to embrace and face the storm or turn our backs, letting it fester. I am here to journey alongside you and venture together to face this storm, whatever it may be. Recognizing challenges in life is a sign of readiness for growth and self-evolution. Therapy is a way to explore this self-evolution in a way that is safe and oriented with your best interests in mind, always.

Everyone is deserving of health and happiness, sometimes we need support along the way. I believe all people have value and purpose. I have 16+ years of experience working with a comprehensive set of tools and interventions to help move toward healing.

Life's detours- those moments, relationships, illnesses, or situations that are different somehow than you expected- can bring you to a place of overwhelm, frustration, worry, hopelessness, or despair. When what you have done in the past to cope is no longer helping, it may be time to reach out. As a licensed professional mental health counselor, I strive to help couples, families and individuals find the resources to work together, communicate and find the harmonious balance that will foster a healthy relationship in a marriage or family setting. Couples and families who are experiencing distress often play the "blame game" and experience difficulty in communication. As a counselor and third party, I strive to help clients listen to each other, find healthy communication techniques, and accept responsibility for their roles in the relationship in turn encouraging love and respect to grow within the family system.
