Constrained construction capacity? #Productivity Analysis from Deloitte shows that the total value of projects in the Investment Monitor database was largely unchanged in the September quarter, at $1.12 trillion. The result was offset by several projects that completed construction or were removed from the database. Despite not expanding in recent months, the value of the Investment Monitor database remains almost 20 per cent higher over the year. The value of planned projects rose to a record $617bn in the latest quarter. This was an increase of $107bn over the year. More than 90 per cent were new wind, solar, battery storage and hydrogen projects that will be critical to Australia’s transition to net zero. On the current trajectory, we will simply be unable to deliver the pipeline. Our report, Nailing construction productivity, reveals there is no shortage of solutions available to drive construction productivity but the sector’s ‘operating system’ requires an overhaul to realise the benefits. "Now is the time to reshape how the construction industry works. If the government, unions and industry can work together, the whole industry will benefit. Instead of fighting for short-term wins, we should focus on shared goals—like improving industry culture and increasing productivity—where everyone benefits." Our CEO Jon Davies shares his thoughts on the opportunity in front of us and the chance to build the foundations of an industry where everyone wins through the NCIF and other initiatives. ACA congratulates David Crisafulli MP and the LNP - Liberal National Party on their victory yesterday in the Queensland State Election. We look forward to working with the new government to create a more sustainable and productive construction industry in Queensland that is able to deliver the infrastructure that Queensland needs at a price it can afford. That's a wrap for the second Construction Industry Leadership Forum of 2024! More than 80 leaders from government and industry came together to hear from panels of project directors and other stakeholders who shared valuable insights on the factors affecting productivity. We then used those insights in roundtable discussions, helping all stakeholders gain a better understanding of the challenges. We hope that this will guide future conversations, decisions and actions across jurisdictions. Thank you to all those who participated and thanks to the Queensland Government for hosting! Great panel discussion on design approval processes with Jon Davies (Australian Constructors Association (ACA), Camilla Drover B Eng MAICD (Transport for NSW) and Matthew Faust (GAICD) (Jacobs) at today's CILF meeting. Attendees heard about the collaborative efforts between these parties to improve productivity. The conversation moved to the roundtables where participants explored opportunities to build on this great work. The Construction Industry Leadership Forum - CILF aims to identify opportunities together and execute intra-jurisdiction.

The second Construction Industry Leadership Forum (CILF) meeting for 2024 is underway. Today's forum is focussed on streamlining aspects of the delivery stage of projects to expand the industry's capacity, looking at key factors like compliance, governance, aligning stakeholder interests and the design approval processes. Our first panel featuring Jacob Latter (Webuild/Clough), Kristine Banks (Consult Australia), Courtney Leeder (Queensland Department of Education) and Andrew Deck (Seymour Whyte) shared their insights on compliance impeding productivity and a burden on capacity. The good news... there are things we can do differently to make projects go faster. Discussions are underway.

It was standing room only in the 'silent theatre' for the ACA's session on Fossil Fuel Free Construction at ISC Connect. Wonderful to hear from our dedicated Committee members on the changes being made on construction sites already - David Fox (CPB Contractors), Chris Bourne (ACCIONA AU & NZ), Karin Wallin (Laing O'Rourke) and Tim Walker (McConnell Dowell). Over the last two years ACA members have made significant progress including: - Introducing the first renewable diesel to Australia in collaboration with partners - Using renewable diesel to substitute mineral diesel both internationally and in Australia. - Adopting electric construction machinery and equipment including electric stationary concrete pump and 250t mobile crane. Adopting batteries to substitute diesel generators and buffer grid constraints. Thanks Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) for the opportunity to share!

In case you missed it last week, the National Construction Industry Forum #NCIF made an exciting announcement. The forum has committed to developing a Building and Construction Industry Blueprint within six months. The blueprint will help to define what good looks like, map existing reform initiatives and to identify issues where further reform initiatives are required. We're thrilled with the commitment to act fast. The opportunity is right in front of us, and we need to move quickly to get this blueprint off the ground. The NCIF’s work won’t overlap with other initiatives, but it will build on progress already made through efforts like the National Construction Strategy, the Construction Industry Culture Taskforce, and the Construction Industry Leadership Forum. Together, these efforts aim to deliver real, measurable outcomes that will benefit the whole industry. The #Movementforchange is alive!
