Mayor David McMullen spoke at two economic development events yesterday; the WSBA Western Suburbs Business Association's 'Breakfast with the Mayor', and the Property Council WA's sundowner, 'Subi surge: The rebirth of Rokeby Road and surrounds.' The events explored the evolution of Subiaco over the years, key factors contributing to its current revival, and a look at the future of the City across sectors such as health, housing, retail, development, and hospitality. Mayor David McMullen said, "The City of Subiaco has worked hard over the past few years – and continues to do so – to help attract investment, improve market confidence, support local business, attract visitation, build on local amenity and, ultimately, make Subiaco thrive. "It all takes work, and it is never just launch events and openings; that is just the tip of the iceberg. The City of Subiaco is a great place to do business and is now having its time in the sun, as a result of hard work by members of our Council, City staff, local business owners and developers, and industry bodies." Members of our Cultural Services team have recently completed specialised training with Sensorium Theatre Inc to offer a new level of inclusivity for children in library programs and events. The training is being put to use in the library's Sensory Rhymetime sessions, and has also inspired the creation of new sensory kits that can be borrowed from the library. The kits include items designed to stimulate the senses and allow kids to discover what works best to support their needs. Mayor David McMullen said, "The City of Subiaco is excited to continue fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where all children, regardless of their needs, can fully participate in and enjoy community programs and events." The City received a commendation at the Most Accessible Communities in WA Awards in December 2024, and was recognised for finding new ways to ensure people living with disability can fully access our services and events. Well done to everyone involved! Read more: https://bit.ly/4hSJNry

Today is the first day of Harmony Week 2025; a time to celebrate the diverse cultures, stories and traditions that make up our vibrant community. We asked Mayor David McMullen about his family history which spans a number of continents and cultures. "I have not had to overcome the tyranny of distance to find myself in Subiaco (specifically, Shenton Park) with my wife and kids. I grew up just the "other side" of Salvado Road, in Wembley; as the crow flies, almost exactly north of where I live now. But go back a few of generations, and the story takes you to two distinct continents. Mum is of Chinese heritage, from Malaysia. On Dad's side, we have: a Captain of a ship that sailed from Ireland to bring some of the first settlers to Augusta; a Pensioner Guard who was posted to the barracks whose brick archway we all drive past every time we head south on the freeway; and some of the pioneering farming families of Toodyay and Northam. This mixed heritage shows through in our family holidays these days, which have taken us to places including the port city of Plymouth in Devon, southwest England - to trace the footsteps of my Great Great Grandfather (also named David McMullen); South East Asia (pictured); and many quintessential camping and caravanning trips to the southwest of WA."

A group of our staff visited the Subiaco Women's Shed this afternoon, to keep the #InternationalWomensDay celebrations going 😍 The women's shed is a not-for-profit charity dedicated to supporting women's physical and mental health. Currently based at Earthwise Community, their vision is to help women discover and acknowledge their potential by creating a safe environment built on friendship, mentorship, and support. The City is proud to support the shed through its Community Development Grants program.
