🎉 A very happy birthday to Uniting Bowden Brae Gardens resident Lucy, who is celebrating 102 years of adventure. 🎉 The much-loved centenarian, and former microbiologist, revealed her secret to longevity: staying active and nurturing both body and mind. Born in the vibrant land of Egypt to Maltese parents, Lucy's life has been a tapestry of rich experiences. She moved to Australia at 28, but her love for adventure has never waned. Even in retirement, Lucy’s thirst for knowledge led her to study genetics, psychology, French literature, Spanish, and more. She speaks 6 languages and at 102 is working on Nepalese as well, via help from our Bowden Brae Gardens nursing and support staff. “Right now, Australia’s early learning system is failing children who aren’t as lucky as many of us have been," said Uniting Director of Impact and Innovation Tamara Pararajasingham. "Devastatingly, these children are the ones that stand to benefit the most from early learning. This is not something we need to, or should, accept.” In unity, our strong group of early learning advocates and providers are calling for investment in the proven solution of a community-based linker program, to address the non-financial barriers many families face. Disability, cultural differences, family violence and other barriers unrelated to money, are preventing families from accessing the lifelong benefits of quality early learning – this is a problem we can address in this lifetime. “The work in ensuring a truly universal early childhood education and care system is not yet done – we have to address non-financial barriers that are preventing children from participating,” said Georgie Dent, CEO of The Parenthood. 15 million syringes are handed out every year in NSW to people who use drugs to prevent blood-borne viruses. 😮 "We have been providing clean injecting equipment since the late 1980s," says Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) Director - Marianne Jauncey. However, for most health organisations that's where their duty of care ends, according to current laws in NSW. Since MSIC opened its doors 23 years ago, no one has ever died while using this service and countless referrals have been made to health and wellbeing programmes.⁣⁣ Uniting's Fair Treatment campaign is advocating for sensible drug laws, removing barriers to treatment and to reduce the stigma of people who use drugs or those experiencing substance use disorders. #WeAreUniting #FairTreatment #health #harmreduction #nurse #healthcare #auspol

Three years ago, the Northern Rivers floods destroyed thousands of homes. Today families are still waiting for a place to call home. The pod villages were supposed to be a temporary solution, but they've become the only option for many. Finding long-term housing in the region has become nearly impossible. The Uniting Recovery Service Team help residents access mental health support and secure permanent housing. They advocate for them, connect them with financial and legal aid, and help them move forward. But for these residents the crisis isn't over. They need real homes and not temporary solutions.
