GSWA recently took part in GEOS Curtin's Geoscience Networking Evening. The next generation of geoscientists engaged with GSWA exhibitors on the significance of precompetitive data for WA's resources sector, career pathways in Earth Sciences, and sources to support their research. As proud sponsors of GEOS Curtin, GSWA considers these opportunities as incredibly valuable for supporting the ongoing professional development of geoscientists now and in the future. GSWA are taking part in the 37th International Geological Congress in Busan, Republic of Korea (25-31 August 2024). Paul Duuring, Manager Mineral Systems Mapping, will present on a “Multidisciplinary Approach to Exploring for Rare-Element Pegmatites in Western Australia” at 10:15 am on Tuesday, 27 August. Paul will also co-convene two thematic sessions in the scientific program with collaborative research partners from CSIRO and The University of Western Australia: ‘Iron Mineral System’ (Session 22: 4-6 pm on Thursday, 29 August) and, ‘Understanding Cover and its links with basement geology through Earth’s history’ (Session 1: 1:50-3:50 pm on Friday, 30 August). All times are GMT +9. Engaging with the IGC supports GSWA’s mission to advance Western Australian geoscience on a global scale. Two sizeable earthquakes in WA's Southwest were detected on Monday, 19 August 2024 with estimated magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.5. Shires of Wyalkatchem, Trayning, Tammin and Kellerberrin are in the midst of an earthquake swarm. Many smaller earthquakes have similarly been detected with activity concentrated around South Yelbeni. On Tuesday, 20 August 2024 GSWA rapidly deployed three telemetered seismometers with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services in Tammin, Wyalkatchem and Trayning. Having more seismometers in the immediate vicinity of the earthquake swarm also allows better detection of lower magnitude earthquakes. With this enhanced detection capability, the fault generating the earthquakes can be better identified and mapped. Geoscience Australia will soon install more seismometers in the same area to further enhance detection capabilities. https://ow.ly/nuzx50T2KOI

The data is in! 📊 Earlier this year, Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) completed the data acquisition phase of a geoscientific investigation into the structure of the earth’s crust in WA’s South West. The data has provided our senior geologists with images of the internal structures of the earth, helping us gain insights into the evolution, nature and depth of these structures. Access the data in MAGIX or GeoVIEW.WA here https://ow.ly/cE0f50SYZEc

GSWA integrates acquired geophysical, geological and geochemical data of Western Australia into 3D structural models that can be viewed and downloaded directly. These 3D models increase knowledge of the State’s subsurface and how the regional architecture of Earth’s lithosphere in Western Australia relates to the location of mineral and energy resources. Invest in Western Australian vanadium: https://ow.ly/FPEI50SHSat Vanadium is a critical mineral in Australia, currently used in Vanadium Flow Batteries (VFB) to provide a reliable and stable energy storage solution. Additionally, vanadium is utilised in the production of high-strength steel alloys for space vehicles, nuclear reactors, tools, and construction girders. Western Australia has significant vanadium resources, with several projects at scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility stages. #Vanadium #CriticalMinerals #InvestinWA
