A harrowing article from The Guardian showcasing the critical role of nature's carbon sinks: https://lnkd.in/dHEbH492 "The oceans – nature’s largest absorber of CO2 – have soaked up 90% of the warming from fossil fuels in recent decades, driving a rise in sea temperatures. Studies have also found signs that this is weakening the ocean carbon sink.", the article states. With our recently published Blue Manifesto roadmap (https://lnkd.in/daZX93FD), tighter and more stringent EU regulation on protecting the oceans is a must to secure our future on this planet. While the international shipping industry has brought growth and prosperity for some, it has left a trail of environmental destruction and human suffering in its wake… 🚢 ‘One Planet Shipping’, the latest report from Seas At Risk and New Weather Institute argues for a new set of narratives that will help us chart the course to a future in which climate change, workers rights, and ocean health are front and centre. What did we learn at the #RethinkFisheries event last week? We need more ambition, more transparency, more open discussion, more music and more TENTS! Thanks for sharing your experience at #EUOceanWeek, Tobias Troll!
The Tent Last week was #OceanWeek. I co-organised the #RethinkFisheries conference in a tent in front of the European Parliament. It was packed, over 180 people showed up in a space with 80 chairs - and stayed to the end thanks to a brilliant line up: Keynote by Inka Cresswell, musical interludes by Yu Lin Humm, 15 year old fisher girl Muireann Kavanagh from Ireland made many cry (including me, the moderator :-), Didier Gascuel made a compelling case for pesca-ecology, Claire Nouvian was on fire, Alexandra Cousteau raised a toast to the ocean, plus many more wonderful speakers, including small scale fishers from around Europe. It was the third time I organised a major event in a tent: 1 - European Citizens Summit 2014, through CONCORD's DEEEP project (“Beyond Europe’s Growth Obsession: Rights, Justice and Democracy for All”), together with the Civil Society Contract Group, breaking the topical silos of global justice, feminism, environment, social rights, culture etc. The tent was big, and while we could have had more citizens, we had many MEPs. And Susan George :-) 2 - A global gathering “Towards a World Citizens Movement” at the World Social Forum in Tunis 2015. We had movements from all over the world working on systemic alternatives to the neoliberal, growth and profit obsessed dominant paradigm. There was a terrorist attack a week before, heavy rains and floods, and the tent collapsed just after the two days convening. It was great. 3 - Now back on the esplanade of the EP with #RethinkFisheries, and a much more professional (and expensive) set up. But why in a tent? - It’s an invitation. It’s open, it’s public, it’s an interface that can be penetrated easily. At #RethinkFisheries we had 60 people showing up who didn’t register beforehand. Transparent walls, open door, low threshold. And open arms to welcome everyone who wants to put the wellbeing of people and planet at the heart of our political economy. - It’s a statement. We plant our tent in the face of power. We are here in our own right, the status quo is not an option, and we expect to be heard (fun moment: When seven grey haired men in suits walked in like an army - representatives of the Irish industrial fishing fleet it turned out. They checked us out and left after ten minutes. Seems we were too big to ignore :-). We need BIG tents to counter the backroom deals that serve the ruling class. We need transparency, mobilisation and connection, beyond our organisational, institutional and topical silos, to drive and shape the great transformation towards a wellbeing economy for all. We need an ambitious #OceanPact, based on the freshly released new #BlueManifesto - another key outcome of #OceanWeek. Another world is possible - and happening. Thanks Patagonia, Low Impact Fishers of Europe - LIFE, Oceana, BLOOM Association, Blue Ventures, ClientEarth, Only One and of course everyone at my homebase Seas At Risk for embarking in this adventure. See you in the next tent!

Marine Policy Officer at Seas at Risk | Working for the vision of a world whose seas and ocean are not threatened by human pressures!
🔥 It's a wrap! ⚡ Today marks the end of #EuOceanWeek! 🌊 From launching the "new" Blue Manifesto, #RethinkingFisheries and launching a new report (see it here: https://lnkd.in/eWt4DEp3), Seas At Risk's General Assembly, connecting with the members, partners, policymakers, MEPs... it's been a lots of laughs! 💡 Main takeaway - whether you call it a #BlueDeal, an #OceanDeal, or an #OceanPact (or my personal favorite of all, an #OceanPactForABlueEUDeal - the time for action is now & solutions are plenty! Notably in the "new" Blue Manifesto: https://lnkd.in/e7mWbi8p

💥 #EUOceanWeek: We had an energising and insightful afternoon getting into the details of what ecocide really means and how its criminalisation can protect the ocean from irreversible damage. It’s clear that an ecocide law can be instrumental in stopping destructive human activities before it’s too late. 🙅 We are so happy so many came out to learn and listen with us - especially the #LookDown activists who came in numbers 🤝 Check out Simon Holmström’s fantastic wrap-up for some of the event highlights! 👇
🔥 Just wrapped up an electrifying event at the European Parliament—passion and engagement radiated through a packed room! 😍 It was an honour to moderate the event "Criminalising Ecocide to Save Our Ocean" bringing my pet causes together nicely. Part of #OceanWeek, hosted by Emma Fourreau and Isabella Lövin and joined by Sue Miller, Matthew Gianni and Farah Obaidullah, to dive deep into how we set a moral boundary for ocean practices. 🌊 ⚖️ Why ocean and ecocide? Because the ocean is not just a resource; it is the heart of our planet. It’s the lungs that give us oxygen, the climate regulator, the lifeline for millions of species. And yet, every day, we watch as it’s pushed closer to collapse by unchecked exploitation. Criminalising ecocide is about making the unacceptable unthinkable. Imagine a world where those who destroy ecosystems on a massive scale are held to account—a world where ecocide becomes a crime under international law, with Europe leading the way. 🇪🇺✨ Our discussion highlighted how this concept could move from concept to reality, with the EU Environmental Crimes Directive on the horizon and a proposal currently at the International Criminal Court. This is our chance to put ocean protection at the heart of global justice. 🌍 This is a good chance to help stopping harmful fishing practices, deep-sea mining, shark finning and other large-scale threats to the ocean ecosystem. To everyone who joined, who spoke, and who listened: thank you. Let’s keep this momentum. The ocean needs our voices. 💙 Missed the event? The recording will be made available soon! 📹 Thanks to the organisers Seas At Risk, Stop Ecocide International and the Gallifrey Foundation.

#EUOceanWeek is still in full swing and we're still buzzing over the cosy community screening of X Trillion and the panel discussion on Tuesday 😊 🎞 🍿 We want to thank Eleanor Church Lark Rise Pictures for joining us, as well as our expert panel of intelligent, passionate and optimistic women: Esperanza Huerta Lwanga, Lucy Gilliam, PhD, Frédérique MONGODIN and Silvia Forni (European Commission). We learned a lot and we are inspired to continue to learn about #microplastics, its impacts on our health, and solutions to stop their emissions into the ocean. Thanks to all of those who joined and filled the theatre and a special thanks to Cinéma Aventure for the beautiful space 🤩

#EUOceanWeek is still in full swing! We're getting ready for our panel on criminalising #ecocide and we couldn't be more excited! Can't join in person? Join us online via live stream: https://lnkd.in/dNGqptcG Gallifrey Foundation Stop Ecocide International
What if we could stop ocean destruction in its tracks? Join us as we explore how criminalising ecocide—the mass destruction of ecosystems—could be the game-changer we need. The #EU is already paving the way with the revised #EnvironmentalCrimesDirective. Now it’s time to take the leap and make ecocide a crime. Could this be the legal tool that helps save the ocean? #EUOceanWeek kicks off in less than two weeks, starting on September 30th. The action-packed week will feature events, a film screening and expert panels like this one organised with Stop Ecocide International and Gallifrey Foundation 🤝 with a panel of experts and moderation by Seas At Risk 🎤 🌊 MEP Emma Fourreau 🌊 MEP Isabella Lövin 🌊 Matthew Gianni Deep Sea Conservation Coalition 🌊 Sue Miller, Stop Ecocide International 🌊 Farah Obaidullah The Ocean and Us 🌊 Simon Holmström, Seas At Risk Save the date! 🗓 Thursday, 3rd October 🕑 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM 🏛 European Parliament, Brussels
