In this peer-reviewed perspective Dr. Gavin Yamey and I, highlight the many serious and detrimental impacts of the U.S. withdrawing from the World Health Organization both on American public health security and on global health security. When the W.H.O is successful and supported the whole world benefits. The U.S. as its biggest financial donor and an important source of technical support through collaborations and relationships that exist between its local public health agencies like the CDC and the W.H.O is a valued and essential member state. At a time when the world faces a surge of emerging infectious disease threats and the growing burden of chronic disease, we need solidarity is responding to these challenges.
