We are keen to see more well trained #nutritional scientists and #publichealth and #foodsystems professionals get into decision making positions and often that starts with having the credentials to get the job. One way to do this is through a postgraduate degree- but these can often be prohibitively costly. A #scholarship is one way to get there. For those that are not aware the UK government #Chevening Scholarship Applications (https://lnkd.in/f2gYKr7) are open now. These are full scholarships for young leaders from Low and Middle Income Countries with good undergraduate degree marks and a record of achievements to study for a Masters degree. Our colleague Mike Khunga won one a few years ago. It allowed him to get a spot on a Masters degree at the University of Leeds. Mikes successful bid was in part supported by his great work with Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement and for his work as a youth leader/volunteer on the 2021 UN Food System Summit. These scholarships are very competitive and so we are going to be running a webinar in the coming weeks with Mike where he can share some insights into what made his application a winning one. I also did my nutrition postgraduate training in the UK and would be happy to talk about some of the Universities with solid nutrition programs you could apply to. We know there is a lot of information available online about how to get a Chevening Scholarship that people can access already - the novelty of this #webinar is that it would be primarily nutrition focused. We don't yet have a date-but it will be likely be mid September. Please let us know if this might be of interest in the comments below by stating 'interested' if you think you might sign up for this webinar and we will follow up when the date is confirmed. For those just wanting to apply for the scholarship- see below.

Zinc is an essential #micronutrient and is often provided as a supplement to help children grow and develop their immune system. #Zinc deficiency is widespread in LMICs, posing a significant risk for morbidity, mortality, and stunted height in young #children. We have recently been reviewing some recent literature on #Zinc supplementation and thought we would share this Cochrane systematic review published last year. Written by @Aamer Imdad et al, the review is entitiled: Zinc supplementation for preventing mortality, morbidity, and growth failure in children aged 6 months to 12 years. The review evaluates the impact of zinc supplementation on reducing mortality and morbidity, along with promoting growth among children. This systematic review was an update to one published in 2014. In this update, 96 studies consisting of randomized controlled trials up to February 2022 were included and GRADE was used to assess its evidence quality. Hospitalized children and children with chronic diseases or conditions were excluded from the study and a total of 219,584 children were included in this review. Studies were conducted across 34 primarily low- to middle-income countries, with the majority of participants being children under the age of five. Here are some of the the key takeaways from the published systematic review: 👉 There was little to no difference in reducing all-cause mortality with preventive zinc supplementation compared to no supplementation  👉Preventive zinc supplementation compared to no zinc does not result in mortality due to all-cause diarrhea but may reduce the mortality due to lower respiratory tract infection and malaria 👉Preventative zinc supplementation likely reduces the incidence of all-cause diarrhea but has little to no difference in morbidity due to lower respiratory tract infection 👉Preventative zinc supplement may lead to a small increase in height The review has not confirmed the optimal range of doses, durations, frequencies, or formulations necessary for zinc supplementation to achieve clinically meaningful improvements in mortality, morbidity, or growth outcomes. The authors suggest that this could be the focus of future studies Overall- This systematic review helps summarize the benefits and drawbacks of zinc supplementation and shows that the benefits of preventive zinc supplementation may outweigh the harms in regions where the risk of zinc deficiency is relatively high. There is a lot of detail in this review and for those that missed it when it came out like we did we would encourage that you give it a read! a link to the review 👉 https://lnkd.in/g3VYDJXy by Sheena Y. #nutritionresearch #systematicreview #nutrition #publichealth

We wanted to share some information on Mexico's groundbreaking new law on adequate and #sustainable #nutrition, that aims to tackle the pressing challenges of diet-related non-communicable diseases (#NCDs) and #environmental #sustainability. It was put into effect a few months ago (April 18, 2024). The law represents the constitutional right to nutritious and quality food, positioning Mexico as a leader in progressive #foodpolicy. With few countries implementing comprehensive measures in this area, Mexico's initiative is a significant step towards healthier food systems and a sustainable future and can serve as a model for other countries. Read more in this The Lancet Article written by Elisa Pineda and team that was published last month: 👉https://lnkd.in/gZ9Xejy8 also in a USDA report 👉https://lnkd.in/gpH4BYeR 👉link to law https://lnkd.in/d5dXY39r #Mexico's new Law includes several specific measures to promote sustainable nutrition. The law establishes the human right to nutritious, sufficient, and quality food. It creates the Intersectoral System for Health, Nutrition, Environment, and Competitiveness (SINSAMAC) to encourage effective planning and implementation across various governmental levels, promoting equitable food production, distribution, and consumption. The law incentivizes social participation by creating #foodcommittees, which allow community involvement in diagnosing problems and implementing strategies. This includes support for local agriculture and active engagement of #farmers. It also aims to regulate the marketing of ultra-processed high-fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) foods and enhance the availability and promotion of nutritious foods. The law's recognition of #foodsovereignty and self-production is a positive development, promoting a departure from neoliberal industrial production models that harm biodiversity and rely heavily on agrochemicals. This change deals with problems such as the "tequilisation effect," which stems from extensive blue agave cultivation, leading to harmful monoculture practices in areas like Jalisco. It also addresses the significant environmental impacts of the avocado industry, including high water usage and deforestation in Michoacán. These examples highlight the urgent need for regulatory and subsidy support to encourage sustainable, equitable, and culturally appropriate #agroecological practices. The General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Nutrition represents a significant advancement in transforming Mexico's food system. It establishes a comprehensive, #rights-based framework to ensure healthy and sustainable nutrition for all. It also serves as a model for other countries to follow By Aimun Jamal

  • We are currently working for a client on a project to do with Multiple #Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS), and so we have been reviewing recent MMS publications and activities. Last year Nutrition International created a MMS cost-benefit tool to aid in global guideline development and national decision-making regarding maternal nutrition investments. This evidence-based, open access modeling tool assists users in determining whether antenatal MMS offers better value for money compared to iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) during pregnancy. It is able to generate estimates on the potential #health impact, budget impact, #economicvalue, #cost‐effectiveness and benefit–cost ratio of investing in MMS compared to IFAS in low-middle income countries. We thought we would share a link to the tool and to its nice supporting paper. In the paper-Allison Verney and team used the modeling tool to assess the cost-benefit of using MMS in 33 countries and also illustrated the key findings specific to the following countries: Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania and Indonesia. Here are results:    In Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania and Indonesia: ●    Transitioning from IFAS to MMS helps avert child morbidity as indicated by improvements in low birth weight and preterm birth rates. This transition also shows improvement in stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates. ●    Based on the data in Nigeria, Pakistan. Tanzania and Indonesia, MMS could potentially avert nearly 100,000 child deaths and over 7 million DALYs over 10 years ●    The analysis suggests that transitioning to MMS is good value for money in all four focus countries analyzed. The cost per DALY averted is considerably less than the GDP per capita of each country and therefore, the transition from IFAS to MMS is considered “very cost effective” according to the WHO guideline.   Findings across all 33 countries: ●    The implementation of MMS may prevent over 250 000 child deaths and avert 25 million DALYs over 10 years ●    Transitioning to MMS is good value for money in all 33 countries with an economic value ranging from as low as US$ 56,608,215 in Timor‐Leste to as high as US$ 30,398,915,178 in China over 10 years. ●    The total budget impact averages around US$ 120 million for the countries - while sizable, this is still considered a lower cost intervention   More details, including the full health outcome and cost-effectiveness analysis can be found in the study’s Web Appendix. This tool is available online. Overall, @ Nutrition International did a great job at creating this tool which will support future policy decisions. With its user‐friendly design, open access availability, and online data‐driven analytics, this MMS Tool can be a powerful resource for governments and nutrition partners.   Full article: https://lnkd.in/gMQ8WaFq The tool is available here: https://lnkd.in/gDgVRyz by Sheena Y.
