Founded in 2017 by a group of enthusiastic students in Zurich, Switzerland, ARIS has grown to become one of the largest engineering student associations in Europe where students can gain hands-on experience . Collaborating with Europe's most prestigious universities – such as ETH Zurich, ARIS is a non-profit organisation dedicated to inspiring and educating students to become the space innovators of the future. ARIS stands for ambition and personal growth, distinguishing itself by developing projects in robotics, rocketry, satellites and other space-related fields. Having started as a small team competing at the Space Port America Cup, ARIS is now a staple of the European space sector, having successfully developed complex systems, such as rocket engines, autonomous robotic systems and satellites.

We are thrilled to announce that project HEPHAESTUS has successfully conducted its first water cold flow tests. 💦 The main goal of these tests was to see how much pressure drops over the fuel lines on our test setup when water flow through, helping us figure out the maximum amount of fuel flow our system can handle. This is a key parameter as we work on designing a bigger engine. We also had some secondary goals, which included making sure all sensors, actuators and parts on the fuels side of the setup were working correctly as well as testing out a prototype pintle injector. 📈📉 The team’s performance exceeded all expectations by being impressively efficient, allowing for many test iterations to be completed. A total of eight cold flows were conducted in the span of eight hours, each with different pressures. This requires good communication, focus and well-spirited teamwork. 🗣️ We are proud of these first tests and are looking forward to conducting more tests, becoming more experienced with test procedures, continuously improving upon efficiency and maintaining safety throughout the testing campaign. 🦺 We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to ETH Hangar, Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich for allowing us to test on their grounds. Stay tuned for more updates about project HEPHAESTUS! 🔥🔨 (Video footage is from a 55 bar, 2 seconds, water cold flow). HEPHAESTUS, named after the Greek God of fire, metalworking and forging, is the newest bi-liquid rocket engine Focus Project at ARIS!🔥 With the backing of ETH Zürich eight highly committed Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), ETH Zurich engineering students seek to develop a flight-ready ethanol/liquid-oxygen-fed rocket engine by improving upon legacy systems. To enable rapid design iterations and improvements the team will employ additive manufacturing technologies and Agile product development methods. As the 4th generation of bi-liquid rocket engine development at ARIS, the goal is to finally see a reusable pressure-fed system soar to the skies by significantly upscaling the nominal thrust and reducing as much weight as possible. 🚀 Before reaching for the heavens, many system tests will be conducted on the ground on the trailer test stand, which was inherited from project HELIOS and PERSEUS. The first iteration is already well on the way and the engine team has been busy designing a rocket nozzle, which uses regenerative and film cooling to manage the high thermal loads. 🧊 Moreover, a pintle injector has been in the works, which is particularly suitable for stable combustion and allows for a modular design appropriate for iterative prototyping. Meanwhile the propellant supply system (PSS) team has defined requirements for fuel and oxidizer flight valves. These design requirements differ from the current valves as they have thus far remained on the ground. Next steps include coming up with ways to modify existing off-the-shelf valves to make them compatible with cryogenics. ❄️ This is particularly crucial for safe operation for both the test stand as well as the rocket. Last but not least, the data acquisition & control systems (DACS) team has inventoried all existing sensors that have been inherited from previous projects. Additionally, these sensors have been prepared for recalibration. Upcoming tasks include the installation of additional environment sensors and the development of a new mission control software. 👨🏻💻 Stay tuned for more progress updates as project HEPHAESTUS pushes the boundaries of bi-liquid engine development. 💧📈 #ProjectHEPHAESTUS #hephaestus #ARIS #RocketScience #Biliquid #regeneratively #cooled #Cryogenic #ethalox #Pintle #Injector #ETHZurich #engineering ETH Hangar Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich
Time for some engineering eye candy! Sometimes we just need to show what beautiful parts our engineers at project NICOLLIER have been cooking up😍 1) Airbrake scoop: Four of these gorgeous cnc parts extend during the last few seconds of rocket ascent to ensure the correct apogee. An apprentice at Regionales Ausbildungszentrum Au crafted them for us🫶 2) Retractable Launch Lugs: These hooks guide the rocket along the launch rail after ignition. To reduce drag during flight, the hooks are spring-loaded to fold into the aeroframe. The delicate hooks were made by AZW 🛠️
