Info

The mission of the Global Rewilding Alliance is to mainstream rewilding in science, policy and practice globally by 2030. Our 170 inspiring partner organisations are active on every continent, bringing back dozens of missing species and reinstating whole ecosystems and land- and sea-scapes. Rewilding is our best available nature-based solution to both the biodiversity and climate crises. Bringing practical hope, rewilding taps into nature’s resilience power and helps it heal itself. The Alliance convenes and commissions top quality research, published in renowned global journals, to provide the credible evidence base for us and our members to lobby policy at the national and global level. We are also a learning forum to help rewilders globally to learn from each other, network and collaborate to accelerate their work on the ground, and build our collective influence. Rewilding is a global movement of art, poetry, film, sculpture, music, literature as well as science and policy. Why? Because big change happens when hearts are moved. Join us in this hopeful, growing, global movement. Nature is our greatest ally.

Climate Change, Biodiversity, Inequality | Africa, Asia-Pacific | Linking research, policy and practice

📣 Today I am joining @IFAW and friends to deliver an exciting side event at #COP16 in Cali, Colombia, where we will be exploring the importance of wild animal populations for supercharging nature based solutions to deliver benefits for biodiversity, people and the climate! 📆 Thursday 24 October, 4.30 pm in the Cano Cristales Room (CEE), Blue Zone, Plaza One. 🎤 At this event I will be joined by colleagues from the Yale School of the Environment, the Global Rewilding Alliance, the UN Environment Programme, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, and Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) to explore how national governments can "Leverage wildlife conservation and rewilding to supercharge climate mitigation and adaptation". 🏞 Prof. Oswald Schmitz, Karl Wagner and Ed Goodall will share with us the latest exciting evidence on the role that wild animals 🦬 🐋 🦦 🦫 🦈 🦌 🐘 can play in supporting national efforts to meet their climate mitigation goals by Animating the Carbon Cycle. We will then hear from Melissa de Kock, Jimmiel Mandima and Patience Gandiwa about the lessons 🤔 that governments and other agencies are learning about linking wildlife conservation and climate action in practice. ✅ I will then present findings from ifaw's research on how governments can integrate wildlife conservation into their national climate action plans, and will run through the practical recommendations from our Wildlife Guidelines for Nationally Determined Contributions hashtag #NDCs, which will be launched at the start of the conference 🎉 Looking forward to meeting up with you all later today!

Ah phew! 75 years of study of sharks in Greek waters shows NO human fatalities from sharks - zero, NONE, zilch, nonada, cero, صِفْرٌ, 零, nul, Null! Some of our team are sea swimmers and have harboured thoughts about ironic, smug headlines in certain tabloid papers announcing "rewilder eaten by shark"...at last we can relax! Jaws did a lot of damage. Let's relax about sharks and look after them as the vital part of ocean ecosystems that they are. ReShark doing great work in this field, along with Blue Marine Foundation, Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas, Fundación Rewilding Chile, Conservation Collective, Whale and Dolphin Conservation and many more.

We are official supporters of the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC)! The HAC is a leading, intergovernmental group of 119 countries united by a shared ambition to implement the global goal of effectively conserving and managing at least 30% of the world’s land and ocean by 2030. 💚 🍀 🐾 By joining the HAC, we will more easily reach out to key governments in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, North America and Oceania with priority messages, science-anchored information (like on Re-Animating the Carbon Cycle) as well as how implementing a rewilding agenda could contribute to meeting the goal of ecosystem functions and services as part of the 30×30 target. How does this impact our network? 💡 HAC can be an important delivery mechanism to mainstream rewilding, the ACC (like the Climate Wildlife Hotspots), and other concepts globally. ⚡ The 30×30 target emphasises the importance of ecosystem functions and services, which rewilding very much is about. 🕸 Reach to 119 governments to promote a rewilding perspective and its practical work across the world. 🔗 Through the 30×30 Solutions Toolkit, the GRA network can share relevant resources related to Target 3, such as publications, videos, reports, assessments, policy papers, etc. 👬 HAC offers collaboration with supporters for various political and technical events throughout the year. The HAC support agreement gives us global recognition and credibility - we are honoured and excited to become part of the growing network of people around the world that are achieving positive action for nature & people. 🌱 £40million for Nature🌱 🌿 Nattergal has successfully completed its seed funding round, raising £40m ($53m) in equity. This is one of the largest seed funding rounds in the Nature restoration sector and a significant milestone in scaling up our operations. 💼 We are delighted to welcome Aviva as a key institutional investor, with Claudine Blamey, Aviva's Chief Sustainability Officer, joining our Board as an advisor. This partnership marks the beginning of a broader strategic relationship, aimed at leveraging private finance to address the UK’s Nature crisis, whilst also benefiting local communities. 🌍 As one of the most Nature-depleted countries globally, the UK faces an urgent challenge. Without action, we could see a 12% drop in GDP due to Nature-related financial risks. Together, Nattergal and Aviva are committed to demonstrating leadership by aligning on initiatives like the 30% by 2030 UK Nature protection commitments and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). 🔗 Read our press release in full here: https://lnkd.in/dQysmZmC

A Colossal Vision: Saving Critically Endangered Species from Extinction 💚⚡ 🦏 How can we protect the world’s most endangered species? 🐾 Is it possible to ‘de-extinct’ animals and plants once they have disappeared from the wild? 💡 And how can we use cutting-edge technologies to assist in #rewilding? These are the questions that Colossal Biosciences and its sister non-profit the Colossal Foundation seek to answer; the Foundation was launched and joined our Alliance on 1st October. The northern white rhino is the most endangered mammal on Earth – only two individuals (both female) remain – and is seemingly destined for extinction. The Colossal Foundation believes it’s possible to save this species and many others from the brink, restoring their populations to rewild the world. With $50 million in funding, the Colossal Foundation aims to halt the extinction crisis through three core focuses: Saving Today’s at Risk Species, Ensuring Tomorrow’s Biodiversity and R&D for Conservation. You can read about the 'How', and meet two other incredible alliance partners, here: https://lnkd.in/eERHWY_f The Colossal Foundation’s work ensures that we retain as much biodiversity as possible, giving us the best chance to return global ecosystems to health. In the words of Colossal’s CEO, Ben Lamm, “Every time we lose a species within an ecosystem, that ecosystem loses stability. Much like a Jenga puzzle, the loss of that species creates an unstable base that is unable to support the structure. De-extinction, species restoration, and species conservation offer solutions to improving the stability of the ecosystem to perform its key function in the global system.” We are all excited to welcome them 💚 #rewildinghope #conservation #deextinction #innovation

Paris is being quietly rewilded. These photos are real, not photoshopped. Which do you prefer? Real transformation is happening in cities that have voted in wise politicians. Thanks Philippe Birker! BTW, will you be our 13,000th follower today? #RewildingHope #GenerationRestoration

Planting more trees is, for me, one of those no-brainers if I were in city management. Trees not only improve air quality, reduce pollution, reduce flooding damages, and cool down the temperature, they also create a more beautiful atmosphere. A for me very unexpected but positive surprise has been the recent development of Paris. I usually come there several times per year for different events and it has undergone an amazing transformation in recent years thanks to its Climate Plan. It was originally published in 2007, but in 2018 Mayor Anne Hidalgo has given it the update that really pushed things forward. She wants to plant 170.000 trees by 2026 and what that results in can be beautifully seen in the picture below. It is the Rue du Docteur Paquelin in the 20th arrondissement for those that want to check it in person, it is not photoshopped. The Climate Plan includes turning schoolyards into green spaces, creating urban forests, and restoring overall biodiversity — making Paris greener, healthier, and more resilient for future generations. I want to give a massive shoutout here for a great sign of the positive impact politicians can have and would hope more mayors and cities follow suit. I personally think Paris has never been as attractive as it is now. Picture credits go to the Parisian photographer EmmanuelSPV and he shared more examples of the transformation online, so check him out.
