Continuing our series of articles addressing the UN Ocean Decade challenges, our latest one investigates the 2023 El Niño event and its implications for ocean ecosystems. Dr. Ben Loveday (Copernicus Marine Training Service Coordinator at EUMETSAT) and marine biology/oceanography student Rebecca Lister (University of Plymouth) utilise satellite data from EUMETSAT and the #Copernicus programme to analyse how El Niño affects marine life off South America’s west coast. As #ClimateChange continues to alter these natural cycles, satellite data offers a clearer understanding, supporting global efforts for a resilient and sustainable ocean by 2030. European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites. Monitoring weather and climate since 1986.
Info
EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. We operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's member and cooperating states in Europe, as well as other users worldwide. The service provided by EUMETSAT helps to enhance and safeguard the daily lives of European citizens. They aid meteorologists in identifying and monitoring the development of potentially dangerous weather situations and in issuing timely forecasts and warnings to emergency services and local authorities, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and protecting human life and property. This information is also critical to the safety of air travel, shipping and road traffic, and to the daily business of farming, construction and many other industries. Account monitored Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00 CET. For general enquiries, please contact: press@eumetsat.int For user support, please contact: ops@eumetsat.int

Coastal and ocean scientist and pragmatist - uncompromising science, extreme collaboration with everyone that matters, tools fit-for-purpose
I enjoyed the reflectiveness of the audience in the Climate & Society session. My lack of focus on data and emphasis on "user" in my presentation was accepted for what it was. From my side, I recognise the importance of the data value chain, and I can only encourage the production of greater insight from the awesome amount and complexity of EO data for coastal and marine applications. Thanks, Hayley Evers-King, for the invitation and for EUMETSAT to create a space for productive conversations.
Day 1️⃣ of the #MarineUserDays offered valuable insights into the future of marine data in Europe, with perspectives from the European Commission, the European Space Agency - ESA, Mercator Ocean International and other partners on satellite observations and data availability. 🛰 In the afternoon, we explored real-world success stories highlighting the power of marine data in actionable decision-making. As we wrap up, attendees are connecting over lightning pitches and a networking dinner, fostering collaborations that will drive the future of marine applications. 🌊 Looking forward to more tomorrow!
