COP29 Azerbaijan – the “Finance COP” – which focuses on the critical financial commitments needed to combat climate change, is about to kick off! 🌐 Fifteen years ago, countries pledged to mobilise $100 billion annually by 2020 to combat climate change. Now, representatives from around the world gather to set a new global finance target. While #climatefinance has increased over the years, it remains alarmingly insufficient. Most estimates indicate that developing countries will need an additional $500 billion to $1 trillion annually in international climate finance, even after deploying their own resources. That’s at least five times the current commitment. Now, as new finance targets are set at #COP29, there’s an issue we can no longer afford to ignore: hidden costs – often referred to as negative externalities – that impact the environment and society. These hidden costs don’t just stack up over time; they fall disproportionately on the shoulders of vulnerable communities. To foster true climate resilience, it’s essential we bring these costs to light and address them head on. 📖 Our recent publication on #TrueCostAccounting highlights critical gaps in how #governments, #policymakers, and #businesses integrate such hidden costs into agrifood financing strategies. This lack of integration leads to short-sighted planning that can harm the environment in the long term and undermine agricultural projects and business models intended to drive sustainable solutions. 📣 This calls for a change to the equation: by applying a True Count Accounting framework that exposes negative externalities, we can plan for more effective climate finance strategies and better ensure a climate-just approach to national planning. ❗We must transform how these hidden costs are accounted to ensure future generations do not bear the unjust burden of paying the hefty cost of the climate impact bill. 🔍 Discover the insights and recommendations in our report to understand how you can contribute to shaping a stronger economic foundation for sustainable development!
