Om os

BIG is a Copenhagen, New York, London, Barcelona, Shenzhen, Los Angeles, Oslo, and Zurich-based group of architects, designers, engineers, builders, and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, interior design, landscape design, product design, research and development. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Not least due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization. We believe that in order to deal with today’s challenges, architecture can profitably move into a field that has been largely unexplored. A pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital formalism. Like a form of programmatic alchemy we create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, parking and shopping. By hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia, we architects once again find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms. BIG is committed to supporting its new parents and their families, and is a proud member of Pledge Parental Leave. While on leave, BIGsters will continue to receive all employee benefits previously provided including health insurance and will remain eligible for salary increases and bonuses, as well as 52 weeks of job security. We offer 18 weeks of total paid leave in addition to accrued vacation to extend the paid leave for primary caregivers, and 4 weeks paid leave for secondary caregivers.

What an honor! The Kaktus Towers in Copenhagen are named Best High Rise in Europe at the annual Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Conference🏆 Situated on an elevated green plateau - a floating public park with views to lively Vesterbro and the Harbor - the Kaktus towers rise up to 80 meters in height. Each of the 495 residences, arrayed around a central core, feature custom designed interiors and private terraces. Generously spaced, multilevel common areas have access to terraces and the green roof, with amenities such as an outdoor kitchen and barbecue areas, laundry room, café, indoor and outdoor fitness spaces. At the base, a commercial plaza connects to the stream of pedestrians emerging from the nearby Dybbølsbro train station. Rather than a typical tower - a repetitive structure of stacked floor slabs - the Kaktus Towers twist at each level to provide unique perspectives for each of the units. The towers are an exercise in economical construction, wherein the cost effective repetition of skewed floor slabs not only results in an optimal net to gross ratio, but also a striking architectural expression. "We are thrilled that the Kaktus Towers have been awarded this prestigious architectural prize. Apart from their architectural expression that redefines Copenhagen's skyline, the Towers demonstrate modern social living concepts of today and tomorrow's needs. Since inception we have been fully leased and experienced a rental growth of 15% which is a true testimony to the demand this property attracts", said Morten Gustafson, Managing Director, Catella Investment Management Denmark. Thank you, Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) for the honors and Catella, Per Høpfner, Artelia , LM Byg A/S, Reform, Malmos - en del af idverde, Geopartner Landinspektører A/S, El Team Fyn, HB Schack A/S for the collaboration! 📸 by Laurian Ghinitoiu, Rasmus Hjortshøj, Catella

This week marks the inaugural Bhutan Innovation Forum, the first large-scale international event focused on shaping the future of Bhutan, anchored by the potential of Gelephu Mindfulness City. We're thrilled to announce the finalized concept for the 2500 km2 masterplan, rooted in the principles of the Gross National Happiness Index and the country's strong cultural heritage. This new economic hub aims to drive the growth of Bhutan through green technology, education, and infrastructure. "For the last year we have focused on turning the Gelephu Mindfulness City Masterplan into a tangible series of buildable projects that will bring this vision to life. From the International Airport designed as a Forest Terminal, to buildings made from locally sourced river stone, timber, and bamboo, to streets and parks that seamlessly manage water like natural ecosystems, the Mindfulness City is a testament to how economic growth can be nurtured by nature and rooted in local culture and heritage.    Designed to attract foreign investment and retain local talent, Gelephu Mindfulness City aspires to demonstrate how innovation can flourish while enhancing and expanding local identity - a conundrum most modern cities struggle with how to tackle." – Bjarke Ingels, Founder and Creative Director, BIG “The Bhutan Innovation Forum is a first step towards realizing the Gelephu Mindfulness City Vision. By sharing experiences and insights between global and local leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators, Bhutan is demonstrating its commitment to securing a stronger future for its younger generations. I’m delighted to announce the progress on the city’s design development, and I look forward to continuing our collaboration with both local and international communities to create a lasting and meaningful impact, shaping a future where tradition and innovation thrive side by side.” - Giulia Frittoli, Partner and Head of BIG Landscape, BIG 🎥 Squint/Opera, Brick Visual Arup Cistri MQDC - Magnolia Quality Development Corporation ERM #CDRInternational

Together with SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC, we’re bringing Manresa Island into its next chapter 🌳🏭 Situated on the site of a decommissioned power plant in southeast Connecticut that extends into the Long Island Sound, the formerly industrial Manresa Island will be transformed into a 125-acre publicly accessible park, with the plant buildings at the heart of the site adapted into a dynamic community hub for learning, discovery, and exploration. Once home to the Manresa Institute, a retreat and recreation destination, the site was converted into a coal-fired power plant in the 1950s. Now, Manresa Island will become a revitalized ecological habitat with educational and recreational opportunities centered around water, unlocking 1.75 miles of waterfront access for the first time in 75 years. BIG will preserve and adapt the plant’s main structures: the boiler building, turbine hall, office building, and 350-ft-tall smokestack into a network of event spaces, research facilities, and areas for play. "Manresa Island is set to become a much-needed foothold for the public along the otherwise rather privatized Connecticut coastline. With our vision for the powerplant, we seek to rediscover and reanimate the majestic spaces hidden within the bones of the decommissioned piece of infrastructure. Boilers, silos, and turbine halls are postindustrial cathedrals awaiting exploration and reinterpretation. As an extension of SCAPE’s resettlement of the island for the enjoyment of human life among many other forms of life, we seek to extend that resettlement into the cavernous spaces within. By editing rather than adding, we will open up and clear out the existing spaces so that the once coal-powered plant can become the framework for the social and cultural life of Manresa's future—from energy infrastructure to social infrastructure." - Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG Read more about Manresa Island: https://loom.ly/tozTajQ 📷 SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC + BIG #ManresaIsland #adaptivereuse #BIGArchitecture #publicspace #communityspace #culturalspace Atelier Ten TYLin Kohler Ronan CCI Tighe & Bond eDesign Dynamics AKRF Directional Logic HR&A Advisors

A former supermarket building becomes the new Museum for Paper Art in the North Jutland region of Denmark ✂️✨ With paper art deeply rooted in the Danish cultural heritage, including the iconic folded lampshades by Le Klint and H.C. Andersen's paper clips, the conversion and extension of the building intends to double the museum's annual number of visitors as well as embrace paper as an art form and expertise. The Museum for Paper Art is conceived as a new lightweight roof structure. Like a single sheet of paper, the roof lands on the existing building and creates space for the new functions around it - uniting the new and old under one roof. Outside, a meandering path with plants and trees native to the area will invite the public to explore the surroundings and create a welcoming public realm to pull the visitors into the museum. The adaptive reuse project is pursuing DGNB Gold or Platinum certification. 📸 by Wizarch and BIG Museum for Papirkunst #museumarchitecture #transformation #adaptivereuse #paperart Enjoy Nordjylland

The new El Cosmico officially breaks ground in Texas! 🏜️ The nomadic campground hotel in Marfa by the ever-brilliant Liz Lambert will be expanded and reimagined as the world's first 3D-printed hotel and development by ICON. The 60+ acre community will feature new guest units, hospitality spaces, and Sunday Homes, which are now available for sale. "Our design for the new El Cosmico is a conversation between El Cosmico’s past and the future. By testing the geometric boundaries of ICON’s 3D-printed construction, we have imagined fluid, curvilinear structures that enjoy the freedom of form in the empty desert. By using the sand, soils, and colors of the terroir as our print medium, the circular forms seem to emerge from the very land on which they stand. We are honored to join Liz Lambert in reimagining desert luxury as something distilled to its purest form: raw, honest, and in harmony with the surrounding environment." - Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG 🎥 ICON #ElCosmico #Campground #Hotel #3DPrinting #BIGArchitecture
