At Amatera, we are accelerating the natural evolution of plants to create the coffee and perennial crop varieties of tomorrow. We started first with coffee, because while we drink a trillion cups of coffee every year, number expected to triple by 2050, rising temperatures will reduce, in the meantime, the area suitable for growing coffee by up to 50%. It is urgent to make coffee varieties more sustainable and climate resistant to fill that massive demand.

🌱☕ Amatera raised €1.5 million to speed up the development of climate resilient coffee and perennial crops! We are pleased to share that we have successfully secured our Pre-Seed round to accelerate the development of our non-GMO breeding platform and bring to life the Robustica, a new coffee variety with the resilience and yields of Robusta and the taste of Arabica, and the naturally caffeine-free Arabica, eliminating the need for chemical and polluting decaffeination processes. Pressure to breed #climatesmart crops—from #salttolerant rice to #heattolerant tomatoes—is rising as farmers battle rising #soilsalinity, higher temperatures, and more erratic weather. But traditional #cropbreeding can take decades to bear fruit, while #transgeniccrops face regulatory and cultural barriers. Two startups out of 10 chosen from 600+ applicants for the 2023 cohort of AgFunder’s GROW impact accelerator are adopting approaches they believe can both accelerate the breeding process for #climateresilient crops and ease their regulatory path. OlsAro (Sweden) is developing climate-adapted crops using AI-enabled trait discovery; while Amatera (France) is accelerating the breeding of climate-resilient perennial crops including coffee.
