For every £1 raised for charity by skydiving, the NHS spends £14 on skydivers' injuries. Here's a bit of fun for a Wednesday morning, I first found this playing "Shot in the Dark" at Christmas (I'd recommend that game :) A 1999 analysis by Lee, Williams and Hadden at two sites found: - c. 1,570 charity parachutists - Total fundraising to charity c. £47,000 - 174 injuries (11%) - Average cost of £3,751 per casualty - Total cost of £650,000 to the NHS A bit of a giggle, and it seems parachuting is actually quite dangerous. But perhaps the more serious point here is how little money was raised. I suspect that's because the vast majority of donations went towards the cost of the skydive, leaving very little for the charities. This model is outdated but still very prevalent; asking friends for charity donations that cover the cost of you doing something fun. It's often more hidden these days, and not obvious how much is going to good causes vs the cost of the activity. Someone explained this problem to me with Channel relay swimming recently; if you're paying less than £500 for your swim, the charity is probably subsidising the difference. As a fundraiser, it's worth considering how much you're paying out of pocket, the true value of the activity, and the amount you're fundraising. It's not unusual for a small proportion of your fundraising to subsidise the activity cost, but I hope the industry is moving to something nearer 10% than 50%.

Long story: The last three years have been rough on the Aged Care sector and the Not-For-Profit sector. Covid, the crisis in the nursing workforce and rising costs of living have made it more difficult and more expensive to provide care. Unfortunately government funding for the most vulnerable elderly people who can’t afford to pay for private care has not increased in line with inflation, meaning that Not-For-Profit providers of aged care cannot afford to keep going and are being forced to close beds. PSO has 8 homes in Otago providing care to over 600 residents. We have had to close beds in the last year because we simply cannot safely staff them. Closing beds means people miss out on care and PSO misses out on income. Income that we rely on to fund our Family Works services, including the food bank and the buddy programme which supports over 100 vulnerable children. The financial year ended 30 June 23 has been our worst ever in living memory. We cannot afford another year like it. So as the CEO and Chair of the Board Jo and I are doing our part to raise the profile of PSO’s need. We both like running so decided we would enter the Great Naseby Water Race as a team. Some common examples include: Building or donating to a mosque, school, or hospital. These institutions provide essential services to the community and will continue to do so for years to come. Donating to a charity that provides food, water, or shelter to the poor. These charities help to alleviate suffering and improve the lives of those in need. Pledging to give a portion of your income to charity on a regular basis. This is a great way to make a difference in the world and to create a lasting legacy. The rewards of sadaqah jariyah are immense. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: a continuing charity, knowledge that benefits others, or a righteous child who prays for him." Sadaqah jariyah is a powerful way to earn Allah's pleasure and to leave a lasting legacy of good. It is an act that can be performed by anyone, regardless of their financial situation. Here are some specific examples of the rewards of sadaqah jariyah: It can lead to forgiveness of sins. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Every good deed is a shadaqah, and even meeting your brother with a cheerful face is a shadaqah." It can increase one's wealth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The one who spends for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it for him." It can help to protect one from punishment in the grave. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "When the son of Adam dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: a continuing charity, knowledge that benefits others, or a righteous child who prays for him." Sadaqah jariyah is a truly beneficial act that can have a positive impact on both the giver and the receiver. It is a great way to show our love for Allah and to help others in need.

The holidays are hard. The economy sucks. People are hurting. Uncertainty is everywhere. We have to do what we can to help. Today, I represented Bay County Disc Golf as President and donated a large (physically) and impactful (monetarily) check to the Gulf Coast Children's Advocacy Center. This is the third year in a row that our community has come together to donate over $2000 to a great cause. When we started Bay County Disc Golf in 2018, we always intended to be a 501(c)3 non-profit. We wanted to give back and invest in our community. We never expected to be donating multiple thousands of dollars twice a year. We are super fortunate to have such generous folks around us to help. This year, non-profits are struggling to meet their goals. I've overseen a significant contraction of our non-profit spending. Anecdotally, I'm hearing non-profits receiving half to a third of what they did a year ago. So, find a charity that does something you believe in this holiday season and donate. Every. Dollar. Counts. Many charities and non-profits depend on donations for grants matching as high as 7x the original contribution. If you don't have a charity you donate to, I'd love to tell you about our charity partners and see if you are interested in supporting them. The Gulf Coast CAC has some aggressive fundraising goals designed solely to ensure they can continue moving their vision forward. So, please. By giving generously and helping those in need, Muslims can reap the spiritual rewards of this blessed month and make a positive impact in their communities. It’s Small Charity Week here in the UK…did you know that 96% of the charities working in the UK are deemed to be small charities – ones with income under £1 million per annum?  Here’s some you might not have realised are small charities… Riding for the Disabled Association Riding for the Disabled groups are almost all small charities…run by local volunteers with local Trustees, and often with local landowners lending land and ponies. Home Start – a very well recognised name in our area – is also lots of small charities? Again, local volunteers, trustees and fundraising opportunities! AgeUK – also has lots of small locally registered individual charities delivering its work on the ground. Ageukiw Not to mention the local charities that don’t have “brand recognition” – I could go through the alphabet naming names – A is for Aspire Ryde; B is for Breakout Youth ; C is for City of Sanctuary UK… What do they all have in common? Well, in terms of governance – they are all registered charities in their own rights. (And of course, there are also loads of CICs, CIOs, sports clubs etc who would fit the financial criteria of “small”, also doing awesome charitable work). But to me, what is much more important and compelling about small charities and community groups is: Local volunteers Local trustees Local staff Local supporters Local fundraising opportunities Local knowledge… And more than any other charities I have worked with (and there’s been a few now!) small charities are so often founded and driven by people personally affected by the issues they are aiming to address, and are surrounded by more people who care or are affected by those issues too. The passion, drive, enthusiasm – call it what you will – to make a wrong thing right, burns bright in the small charity sector.
