A visit to the community health workers at Hida Kality Health Post saved Dembobe Sidemu's life. "We realized her symptoms resembled a diabetic patient," says #proCHW Abinet Tadesse, using her skills from Last Mile Health's new training in non-communicable diseases. Today, Dembobe manages her diabetes with Abinet's help. "If not for this health post, I would have faced many problems," Dembobe says. Read her story: https://bit.ly/3C4GNcj

Our story started in Liberia, but our vision is global: a health worker within reach of everyone, everywhere.
About us
Founded by survivors of Liberia’s civil war, Last Mile Health’s mission is to save lives in the world’s most remote communities. We partner with governments to build strong community health systems that equip professionalized community health workers to provide essential, primary healthcare to rural and remote communities. We work side-by-side with Ministries of Health in Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, and Sierra Leone, and globally to transform community health financing through Africa Frontline First.

Thanks to Exemplars in Global Health for highlighting our research with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health to examine the recruitment, training, and implementation of the country’s first fully integrated community health worker program. Niranjan Bose participated in #DevexWorld today to discuss how #Exemplars in Global Health (EGH) is answering a simple, yet often unexplored, question: what’s already working in health – and how? “We found there is amazing innovation happening in developing tools and technologies. So, we focused on the how: How do these innovations get delivered, get scaled, and how do countries make massive progress given limited resources?” Bose shared one area rich with innovation: community health worker (CHW) programs. After studying four countries that effectively scaled their community health workforces, EGH is now working with the Ministry of Health of Sierra Leone to help reform its own CHW program. Thank you Devex for inviting us to a great event.

On International Day of Care and Support, we recognize the #proCHWs who ensure people in the world's most remote communities can access the essential healthcare they need. "I use this learning to save my other children and my community as a whole," says Amadu Kamara of Sierra Leone, who became a community health worker after three of his children died from preventable, curable diseases. "Community health workers are the backbone of primary health care delivery, particularly in hard-to-reach areas." Read Amadu's story: https://bit.ly/4gxUrV0

This week, we were honored to host our partner LGT Venture Philanthropy to capture footage for an upcoming video about our work in Liberia. Community health worker Victoria Karpay welcomed us to her community of Taye Town in Grand Bassa County, where she was joined by her supervisor Martina Kanneh. Together, they have ensured there are no maternal or child deaths in this community over the past three years -- a testament to the power of investment in a strong community health workforce that can reach everyone, everywhere.

When Marta Alemu developed vision problems, she could no longer read easily and risked losing her small business in Sidama, Ethiopia. But after learning about a vision screening at the local health post, she was treated by a community health worker trained through Last Mile Health's new non-communicable disease training module, and fitted with glasses from RestoringVision. "There were no more blurry letters—everything was clear. Reading became very easy for me," she recalls. "Now I have confidence in myself again."

Meet Joy Kamwendo, a MERL specialist on Last Mile Health's Malawi team! She's passionate about using data to strengthen health systems and improve patient care. "For me, data does not just represent numbers, but it is a resource that has the power to spearhead and inform so much change and impact as health managers use data for decision-making," says Joy.

On International Day of the Girl Child, we celebrate the women health workers who break gender barriers and serve as role models for girls--like Martina, a community health supervisor in Grand Bassa County, Liberia. To travel between communities and health posts, Martina earned her motorcycle license, something few women in the country get the chance to do. The girls in the communities she serves say, "Aunty Martina can ride, so I can ride too." #DayOfTheGirl
