Together We Empower Rural India
About us
S M Sehgal Foundation (“Sehgal Foundation”) is a public, charitable trust registered in India since 1999. Every person across rural India deserves to lead a more secure, prosperous, and dignified life. With that vision in mind, our mission is to strengthen community-led development initiatives to achieve positive social, economic, and environmental change across rural India. With support from donors and partners, Sehgal Foundation designs and promotes rural development interventions that create opportunities, build resilience, and provide solutions to some of the most pressing challenges in India’s poorest communities. The foundation team works together with rural communities to create sustainable programs for managing water resources, increasing agricultural productivity, and strengthening rural governance. The team’s emphasis on gender equality and women’s empowerment is driven by the realization that human rights are central to developing every person’s potential. As an emerging knowledge leader on rural development issues in India, the foundation team engages in participatory research, impact assessment, interactive dialogue, and community media to take informed actions and achieve sustainable results. The team collects, assesses, and reports qualitative and quantitative data across an array of development outcomes, building an archive of evidence-based research that incorporates the voices and views of rural communities and demonstrates the results.

The empowerment of women is advanced through SMSF's two key initiatives: the Women Leadership School (WLS) and the Women Farmers School (WFS). The WLS focuses on reshaping women's traditionally limited roles in household and community decision-making. Meanwhile, the WFS aims to promote gender equality by enhancing women's agricultural skills and boosting their income from farming. These efforts work to elevate the status of women's labor, ensuring it is no longer viewed as secondary to that of men. #smsf #agriculture #farmers #women #farming #training #sdg5 #genderequity #genderequality

Enabling FPOs Through Participatory Business Planning: A Call for Collaboration 📅 Event Recap: We just wrapped up our second business plan preparation workshop in Kolar at KVK, following the first held 3 weeks ago in HD Kote. CEOs of FPOs, SM Sehgal staff, and FPO directors participated, making the session highly interactive and practical. 👥 Who Attended: - Day 1: CEOs and partner staff worked on business plans based on data collected and online feedback. - Day 2: FPO directors reviewed and gave input on the plans presented by their CEOs. Key Learnings 1️⃣ FPO Board of Directors (BODs) play a crucial role in goal setting for FPOs. 2️⃣ CEO-driven planning, supported by partners, ensures operational clarity. 3️⃣ Business planning is most effective through discussions and step-by-step guidance. 4️⃣ Conducting the process in Kannada helped participants focus on ideas, not language barriers. 5️⃣ Simple, iterative processes keep everyone engaged and empowered. At SkillGreen, we emphasize localized business planning—done in local language, (here Kannada) for better ownership and understanding. Unlike traditional expert-led English plans, this method ensures the FPO's ideas are truly captured and shared by all. Plans will only be translated to English after board approval Business planning is more than just a document—it's a roadmap for success. Partner with SkillGreen to empower FPOs with localized, affordable, and actionable business plans that drive real progress. Let’s collaborate to make FPOs successful. Reach out today! As part of their experiential learning, students from Xavier Institute of Social Service—one of India’s leading business schools—visited Kolar, Karnataka, to explore innovative social impact projects. They engaged with the Vrishabhavathi Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), learning about community-driven initiatives like the Amruth Stall and polyhouse farming, where scientific techniques are used to cultivate capsicum. The students also visited the ragi processing unit, to understand S M Sehgal Foundation’s dedicated approach to community sustainability. This visit aimed to inspire future business leaders to incorporate social responsibility into their careers. #sustainability #socialImpact #XISS #ngo #ruraldevelopment #agriculture #polyhousefarming #ruralfarmers
