Built environments that foster sustainable livelihoods in Animal Husbandry #Backyardpoultry farming offers a reliable, secondary source of livelihood for over 30 million rural households in India. In response to the unique challenges faced by farmers in backyard poultry due to climate change induced stresses - like heat, animal attacks etc, solutions have been co-developed with partners resulting in an innovative, decentralized renewable energy (DRE) integrated, climate-adaptive #poultrycoop solution. A pilot program was implemented in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Karnataka in Davangere district, where 80+ farmers adopted the #poultrycoop solution, ensuring prevention in production losses and reliable income. 🌟50% reduction in egg loss reported 🌟80% reduction in mortality rates reported 🌟Additional income of min. INR 1,00,000 / annum Using climate-adaptive strategies such as thermal insulation through building materials, improved ventilation along with need-based solutions like dedicated egg laying areas, standard spatial capacity, solar power run lights, etc. boosts productivity and income while maintaining a low-cost, easy-to-manage system. Bringing impact through sustainable energy innovations and enterprises
About us
Sustainable energy practitioners have long noticed energy access affects rural and urban populations’ livelihood, generation capacity, education attendance, health outcomes and overall quality of life. In response, SELCO India (for profit, social enterprise) created SELCO Foundation on 5th October, 2010 as a public charitable trust, with the mission to: 1. Systematically identify diverse needs of underserved communities, understand and define the role of sustainability and energy in these communities. 2. Create and support innovative and sustainable solutions that positively impact well-being, education and livelihoods and work towards the alleviation of poverty. 3. Foster ecosystem development in the social sector through holistic thought processes in technology, finance, entrepreneurship and policy. SELCO Foundation envisions a socially sustainable society: we seek to create avenues for asset building, enhancement in quality of life and wealth creation that will uplift deprived sections of society through sustainable development solutions. It uses soft funding and flexible capital to develop robust and field-proven technological and financial models in the field of energy and sustainability. It aims to generate public awareness about these models, while also building the ecosystem for the creation and delivery of such solutions. The foundation supports replication and utilization of these models in other deprived regions of India and the world, thereby achieving greater leverage on resources.

Hear from Shanti Raghavan, Founder of EnAble India, and Huda Jaffer, Director of SELCO Foundation, on how the #purpleinnovations challenge seeks to reshape accessibility, unlock potential, and enable equitable livelihoods for PWDs, especially in underserved rural communities. "Across a range of entrepreneurs and types of disabilities that we have worked with, the moment you have a climate stressor, it makes it way worse for people with (for example) spinal cord injuries where things like temperature, humidity hinder PWDs to access livelihood and work. We are looking to solve these under this challenge." - Huda Jaffer, Director, SELCO foundation. “People with disabilities are innovators and problem solvers and their lived experiences bring unique perspectives to the table. Even if you are a person without disabilities and without a lived experience but are able to bring a universality to the solutions you are developing, please apply" - Shanti Raghavan, Founder of EnAble India. Solutions don’t always need heavy modifications. With simple accessibility adjustments, many existing solutions can be made suitable for people with disabilities. We are looking for applicants with a great idea or concept and will help take the same to fruition thereby creating solutions for scale. Open to all - enterprises, individuals, technology developers, innovators and anyone with sector level passion and interest in solving and finding solutions for persons with disabilities accessing livelihoods and essential services in rural contexts. EnAble India and SELCO Foundation invite you to participate in the Purple Innovations Challenge. Don’t miss out! Apply by November 30, 2024. SELCO Foundation hosted an ecosystem stakeholder roundtable on 25 October 2024, focused on enhancing the resilience of Non-Timber Forest Product (#NTFP) value chains, bringing together key stakeholders to address the pressing challenges faced by tribal communities and PVTGs in India. With these communities collecting NTFPs worth approximately Rs. 2 trillion annually, it is vital to create an organized system that maximizes the product value and ensures fair returns. During the roundtable, stakeholders – tech enterprises, NGOs, FPOs and Producer Companies, Financiers, Market players engaged in meaningful discussions about the barriers hindering progress, such as lack of processing infrastructure, limited access to capital, and the need for groundbreaking innovations. With the aim to build an #inclusiveecosystem that empowers communities and strengthens their livelihoods, we explored innovative solutions and collaborative strategies to co-design the Making NTFP Value Chains Resilient Program, which aims to support producer groups and community led enterprises in driving sustainable change. Together, we can create a future where tribal communities thrive and their contributions to the economy are recognized and valued. PWDs have been champions for sustainable energy driven livelihoods. Till date SELCO Foundation has facilitated sustainable livelihoods with solar driven productive use appliances and green workspaces for over 1300 Entrepreneurs with Disabilities. Partnerships like EnAble India, The Association of People with Disability (APD, India), Rural Development and Panchayat Raj - Government of Karnataka, NLM Karnataka, BIRDS NGO, Hosabeluku etc. have made this possible. To know more click here: https://lnkd.in/g8nXXFxg While we design scale programs for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities, one of the biggest and glaring gaps is that of customised need-based technology innovations which can transform the ease of running business and enhance productivity. EnAble India and SELCO foundation are looking for interdisciplinary teams that are keen to develop solutions that improve the potential of EWDs within their entrepreneurial and livelihood journeys.
