The end of July marked the completion of our three day in-person workshop on 'SBC Programming: Integrating Agency, Social Norms and Gender'. Our sincere thanks to Sara Jewett, Nicola Christofides, Paul Bukuluki, Alexander Kagaha (PhD), Hunter Davis, MPH, Amanda Farr, Rajib Nandi and Sushmita Mukherjee for facilitating insightful and participatory sessions! We are also incredibly grateful to Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST) for facilitating community interactions for this workshop - it was a valuable experience for our participants. This year's theme for International Youth Day highlights the key connection between digitalization and accelerating the progress of the SDGs, emphasizing the crucial contributions of young people in this transformative process. It is therefore increasingly important to ensure equitable norms for access to digital infrastructure and creation of safe and empowering virtual spaces. In November 2023, we explored digital spaces can be leveraged for norm shifting, sharing the key takeaway: Social and gender norms are driven by perceptions about a behaviour, attitudes of stakeholders and consequences of the action. A panel of experts will start by sharing measurement and learning approaches they've used to: 1) understand the relationship between social norms and IPV; 2) unpack change pathways; and 3) assess the effectiveness and feasibility of social norms-IPV approaches. We will end by collectively identifying best practices, challenges, and recommendations for advancing measurement and learning social norms-IPV approaches. Register here! #NormsResearch This working paper by PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy examines and reports social norms within and outside the workplace that influence women's access to decent work along with other factors such as infrastructure and socio-economic background. The research is largely in line with the larger body of social psychological research that examines how gender discrimination perpetuates in the workforce despite the presence of non-discriminatory laws. Points to a wicked question - How do we shift the norms that would complement improvements in infrastructure and regulation to promote the equitable participation of women in the formal and paid economy? Key Takeaways: Learned how to make social & behaviour change happen in a better way by thinking about people's power to make choices, social norms, and how gender affects things. Understood how people's ability to make choices is often shaped by social structures, and how norms often reflect the values of those in power. In addition, learned the importance of a gender lens, recognising that gender intersects with other forms of power. Learned that creating lasting change means not just tweaking behaviours, but also shifting power. This means understanding who benefits from the status quo, who's missing from the table, and how to amplify the voices of the communities we work with. It's about understanding that change is a journey, not a quick fix, and that solutions should be tailored to each unique context. Building a Bridge from Theory to Program Design in Norms Programming for Adolescents This is an extremely useful paper that sets it apart from some of the previous material that I’ve recently shared on social norms. One of the quotes from it that I really like is: “Social norms are not static: they continually evolve. The aim of norms-shifting interventions is to harness their inherent mutability, and help people shift relevant norms in directions that promote the wellbeing of affected populations (in this case, adolescents and youth).” Unique Aspects: Comprehensive Framework: Unlike previous documents that focus on individual tools or specific strategies, this paper provides an integrated socio-ecological framework called "The Flower for Sustained Health." It bridges the gap between academic theory and practical program design, offering a holistic view of social norms within larger structural contexts. Ethical Considerations: This paper emphasizes the importance of ethical considerations throughout the program cycle. It provides guidelines on how to engage communities ethically and sustainably, ensuring interventions respect cultural traditions while promoting positive change. Detailed Examples and Case Studies: Real-world examples, like the Bandebereho intervention in Rwanda, are thoroughly analyzed to illustrate how theoretical concepts can be translated into successful programs. This in-depth analysis of case studies offers valuable lessons for program designers. Focus on Power Dynamics: A significant portion of the document is dedicated to understanding and addressing power dynamics within communities. It highlights how power holders can either resist or support social norm changes and provides strategies to engage them effectively. Resource-Rich Content: The document is a treasure trove of resources, including the Social Norms Exploration Toolkit, the Social Norms Measurement Compendium, and multiple guides on scaling up norms-shifting interventions. These resources equip practitioners with the tools needed for effective program implementation. Why This Matters: Holistic Approach: By integrating various behavioral drivers and situating social norms within broader socio-economic and political contexts, this paper offers a comprehensive approach to designing impactful AYSRH programs. Empowering Practitioners: The paper provides practical insights and tools to help practitioners navigate complex social landscapes, ensuring interventions are both effective and culturally sensitive. Building a Collaborative Community: It encourages collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and donors, fostering a global network dedicated to advancing normative change. If cooperating means that everyone in the team gets a reward, children aged five years learn to develop social norms that go beyond merely describing the behaviour required for winning and communicate them to new members - suggests this study conducted in Germany.
