The Habitats Trust presents the Action Grant to support individuals and organisations undertaking on-ground conservation projects aimed at protecting lesser-known species and habitats in need of critical assistance. A total of ₹25,00,000 will be awarded to about three most suitable applicants for a tenure of two years. Shaped like an inverted sock, it’s known as 'Kandhil Pushpa' in Marathi, and also goes by interesting names like 'Kharchudi', 'Kharpudi', and 'Khatundi'. Filmmaker Karabi Jamatia, from the Jamatia tribe—one of Tripura’s 19 indigenous tribes—is on a mission to preserve traditional knowledge that often goes undocumented and risks being forgotten. Through her film Bonaji, she shines a light on ancient medicinal practices and beliefs, using her craft to ensure these traditions endure for future generations. India is home to about 60% of the world’s Asian Elephant population. In 2002, a herd made its way to Sindhudurg, travelling from Sargave and Aynode to Hewale, Kir, and Bekruli. This short film is part of a 100-film series, ‘Species and Habitats Awareness Programme’, focusing on the biodiversity of Maharashtra, in partnership with The MahaMTB. Independent filmmaker Chentei Khiamniungan from Nagaland used his drone and telephoto lens to capture close-up shots of honey bees and honey hunters in action, even climbing a cliff to get the perfect shot. Filmmaking presented its challenges, from navigating the cliffs to protecting himself from bee stings, but in the end, everything came together perfectly.
