🌍 Did you know antimicrobial resistance (AMR) contributed to 4.95 million deaths globally in 2019? This silent pandemic threatens to make simple infections deadly and erode our ability to treat common diseases. Why does #AMR matter now? ✔ Global Health Crisis: AMR isn’t just a looming future threat—it’s already here. In 2019, bacterial AMR alone caused 1.27 million deaths. ✔ Worsening Future Pandemics: AMR could make future pandemics far deadlier. Imagine a superbug we can’t treat with today’s medicines. ✔ Everyday Impact: Misuse of antibiotics and poor sanitation are driving this crisis. We urgently need to rethink how we use these life-saving drugs. What can we do? ✔ Promote Responsible Use: Only use antibiotics when prescribed by a healthcare professional. ✔ Strengthen Hygiene: Simple actions like handwashing can prevent infections and reduce antibiotic use. ✔ Invest in Innovation: We need new antibiotics and alternative treatments to outpace resistant bacteria. By addressing AMR today, we not only protect public health but also ensure preparedness for future pandemics. At #UNGA79, we’re coming together with global partners to advance solutions and safeguard the future of medicine. Let’s make sure the treatments of today work for generations to come. Last month, Amref Health Africa in partnership with Villgro Africa and other partners hosted the Transforming African MedTech Conference (TAMC) in Nairobi. The discussions centered around key challenges and emerging opportunities in shaping the future of MedTech across #Africa. We tackled: 🚧 Market Fragmentation: Diverse regulatory standards complicate market entry. 💸 Affordability: High costs and limited financing options slow adoption. 🐢 Regulatory Delays: Slow and inconsistent processes impede progress. 🧩 Stakeholder Awareness: Limited demand due to lack of knowledge. 🚚 Supply Chain Issues: Weak distribution networks restrict access in remote areas. Opportunities identified: ✅ Regional Harmonisation: Align regulatory standards for easier market entry. 🤝 Private-Private Partnerships: Foster collaborations between MedTech and diagnostics. 💡 Innovation Hubs: Support local startups to develop tailored solutions. 🌍 Digital Health Integration: Combine MedTech with digital solutions for broader impact. 🔄 Circular Economy: Design technologies for reuse and refurbishment. 🏭 Local Manufacturing: Build local capacity and reduce reliance on imports. This is just the beginning! The conversations will continue at #AHAIC2025 (2-5 March 2025) in Kigali, #Rwanda, where we will further focus on Africa’s capacity for end-to-end Research, Development, and Innovation including the capacity to produce Medtechs locally. These conversations will seek to build a roadmap for capacity building of African institutions to manufacture #health products and #technologies. Let’s keep the momentum going!
