The unique deck layers are on full display as we continue to follow Yacht Zero’s construction progress. The top layer is Tesumo, a modified wood alternative to traditional teak. And beneath that 30mm of cork for deck levelling as well as acoustic and thermal insulation. Tesumo is made from sustainably cultivated wood and uses thermal modification, impregnation and drying processes to yield a material almost indistinguishable from traditional teak. It’s one of many products proving to the marine industry that moving away from teak doesn’t require a sacrifice in performance or aesthetics, and it can be done without looking to synthetic alternatives. There is a growing interest in the modification of bio-based materials to enhance desirable material characteristics which nature inherently provides. And the products appearing in this new space are already approaching and sometimes even exceeding the durability of synthetic materials while retaining the biodegradability and most of the aesthetic qualities of natural materials. The 30mm thick cork layer is more than double the 12mm typically used and in that sense is not innovative in itself. But this change significantly improves the vessel's insulation envelope and shows that progress doesn’t always come in the form of a new product. Sometimes it’s just a small change to an industry standard process. All it takes is the right mindset.
