Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC) constitute a safe and very promising solution for storing hydrogen on board ships.

Safety and public trust were the keywords of the 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫 2025, and Ship-aH2oy was highlighted as Øystein Skår of Hydrogenious LOHC Maritime made the case for their innovative liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology. Using Benzyltoluene (BT) as LOHC, their goal is to realise the safest and most efficient solution to transport renewable energy from source to ship: 💧 No direct handling of molecular hydrogen – Hydrogen stays safely bound in LOHC until until released via catalysis. 💧 No cryogenic or high-pressure storage – LOHC is stored in standard steel tanks, allowing flexible onboard placement. 💧 Enhanced safety – With a flashpoint of 112.5°C and comparable hazard potential, LOHC is significantly safer than diesel and other alternative fuels. Through the Ship-aH2oy project, we aim to demonstrate LOHC in combination with hydrogen fuel cells onboard an offshore wind vessel to pave the way for zero-emission maritime operations! 🚢🌍 The 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫 2025 was co-hosted by Maritime CleanTech and Ocean Hyway Cluster as part of the climate festival Varmere Våtere Villere to showcase real-world solutions for the sustainable future of shipping. #hydrogen #innovation #lohc #maritime #decarbonisation Runar Bjørkvik Mæland
