Schools from around NZ were involved in this year's Rock the Future AQA competition, where students got a chance to visit a quarry and learn about aggregates. They then had to write a poem to highlight the benefits of aggregates for New Zealand. It was great to see our team jump to support FENZ as a fire broke out on land neighbouring our Amisfield Quarry. The team took 5 to assess the risk and then worked under the guidance of FENZ to help put out the fire and protect the DOC reserve and the Shaeffer beetle's habitat. After seventeen years in the industry and eight years as a quarry supervisor, Noel Hall "took a leap of faith" nine months ago and embarked on the next step in his career as our Tamahere Quarry Manager. Noel says working with the tight-knit Tamahere team has been amazing experience so far. "We have a range of talented team members, some new to the quarry industry as well as more experienced staff members who share their knowledge and wisdom – we have a "one team" attitude and help each other any way we can. We're proud to be involved in helping to build the SH1 Loop Road, with a 25-year highway design, and 100-year structure design with the supply of high-quality materials. "We've been really impressed with the level of service, support, and technical knowledge of the Winstone Aggregates Otaika team," says Lance Vazey, Project Manager at Oxcon. "It's been a real collaborative effort between Oxcon, our subcontractors EarthworX, Firth and Winstone Aggregates to deliver." The quarry worked extensively with Oxcon and subcontractors to understand the performance of newly produced materials and make minor modifications to achieve spec. The Winstone Aggregates pugmill has the added bonus of being able to plant-mix offsite and deliver efficiently on the ground.
