Due to the strong winds and waves brought by Typhoon Kristine (Trami), several houses along the coastal area of Brgy. Mabua, Surigao City, were destroyed. Fortunately, the affected families were safely evacuated to nearby centers, bringing with them Light Of Hope Philippines, Solar CloudGrid Units to ensure continued access to clean energy while staying in the evacuation centers. This project in Surigao is in partnership with GGGI Philippines (GGGI) and in collaboration with Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the Local Government Units of Surigao del Norte Province, with the support from 𝐁𝐈𝐌𝐏-𝐄𝐀𝐆𝐀-𝐑𝐎𝐊 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝 (BKCF). The initiative aims to strengthen resilience and promote sustainability in disaster-prone areas across the Philippines. By deploying clean energy solutions and empowering local communities, the project seeks to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters, ensuring that vulnerable regions are better equipped to recover and thrive. #LightOfHopePH #LightHeroes #LightOfHopePH #KristinePH

There are significant future opportunities for our partner communities to become sustainable, zero-emission facilities. Given that public schools are often designated as evacuation centers during calamities, the need for a reliable, resilient renewable energy source is crucial. Having their own independent power supply would ensure essential systems, such as lighting, vaccine freezers, cooling equipment, and communication devices remain operational, enhancing disaster preparedness and response capabilities 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 (ZE-Gen) aims to advance renewable energy-based alternatives in countries that depend on fossil-fueled generators. The Accelerator is part of the ZE-Gen initiative, which was launched at COP27 and is a collaborative initiative led by The Carbon Trust and Innovate UK with support from the IKEA Foundation and 𝐔𝐊 𝐚𝐢𝐝 through the UK Government’s 𝐀𝐲𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝. The second half of the week-long Zero Emission Generators Accelerator Programme’s Ignite activity in the Philippines was spent in Cebu and Bohol. During this time, the UK delegates visited several potential project sites, including locations in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, as well as Getafe and Talibon in Bohol. These site visits provided valuable insights into the opportunities for implementing possible zero-emission energy solutions in these areas in the near future #KeepOnSharingtheLight #LightHeroes #LightOfHopePH

🌏 This week the Zero Emission Generators Accelerator Programme’s Ignite activity has been taking place in the Philippines. The activity has been supporting 10 innovative businesses that are currently in phase 1 of their ZE-Gen projects and preparing for phase 2, which requires collaboration in country. During the first half of the week the cohort spent time in Manila, with highlights including: a networking reception hosted by British Ambassador to the Philippines Laure Beaufils at which James C. gave an introduction of ZE-Gen to a range of stakeholders across the energy ecosystem (before handing over to the 10 businesses to introduce themselves!); meetings with British Embassy Manila, Asian Development Bank (ADB), ADB Ventures, Kickstart Ventures, UNDP Philippines; and a networking breakfast attended by National Transmission Corporation - Philippines, PNOC Renewables Corporation, PHINMA, and many others. Throughout the week the cohort have been presenting their projects/technology and engaging in fruitful discussion with the stakeholders and one another, which has been incredibly exciting to see! The rest of our time will be spent in and around Cebu City, so watch this space for an update at the end of the week!
