Meet Abdul, a 29-year-old married father of two, who used to work on shoes and bags on his small balcony in Koidu City. In 2019, a friend informed him about the opportunity to submit a business plan to compete for a grant from GIZ. Abdul seized this chance and emerged as the winner. With the grant, Abdul established a business in a building near his home and invested in essential machinery (Picture 1). Recognized for his potential, he underwent additional training with GIZ in business administration in 2022. Today, Abdul's shop employs 10 permanent staff members and 5 day laborers. His business has flourished, providing him with the means to plan for expansion. Currently, he is in the process of constructing a larger production facility where he intends to hire 60 employees. Adjacent to the production site, a new shop is also under construction (Picture 2+3). Abdul highlighted: "GIZ supported me greatly to fulfil my entrepreneur dreams". We have more good news from the PPP Fund! 5000 wild palm farmers in Bong County, Liberia, have been empowered with essential Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and post-harvest handling techniques. These newly skilled farmers will now be integrated into the supply chain of our partner, J-Palm Liberia. This initiative aims to boost production, improve harvesting, milling, and marketing processes, enhance incomes, and uplift livelihoods, ultimately reducing poverty among smallholder farmers. Using a Training of Trainers (ToT) model, 700 lead farmers from 15 communities were trained to pass on their knowledge, reaching an additional 4,300 farmers. Together, we are fostering sustainable agriculture and driving economic growth! 🌍✨ Today, we celebrate World Youth Skills Day! Recognizing the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship, this day highlights the crucial role of fostering youth empowerment and economic growth. Established by the United Nations in 2014, the World Youth Skills Day aims to enhance youth potential and address global unemployment issues through initiatives to encourage skill development and create awareness about the challenges and opportunities faced by young people worldwide. In Sierra Leone, the Employment Promotion Programme (EPP IV) has trained over 11,900 young people in vital skills like Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), Agro-processing, Communication, Entrepreneurship, Beauty and Cosmetology, Solar Installation, and Hand-welding through practical courses lasting from 17 days to 6 weeks. This has resulted in the creation of 5,474 jobs and 5,098 self-employment opportunities! The fatalities in road accidents in Sierra Leone remain a major security problem, not only for international organization operating here, but first and foremost also for the people in Sierra Leone. Although the number decreased significantly over the past years from 867 annual fatalities in 2020, to 269 in 2023, according to the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority – we are happy to contribute to road safety by providing a comprehensive driver training done by Business-Risk Consulting to ensure safer journeys for our drivers, passengers and other traffic participants! Through this initiative, we're not only investing in our team's skills but also in the well-being of the communities we serve. The PPP Fund for Fragile States West Africa is excited to announce that seven buy-back centers in Monrovia's major markets for recycled waste will be established, creating 70 new jobs for women and youth. This will improve the income and working conditions for 2,000 informal waste collectors. The informal workers will collect plastics, organics, and electronic waste and aims to ensure all parties fulfill their roles, driving positive change in waste management to the benefit of local communities♻️💪🏾 The project was agreed as a trilateral partnership between Green Cities Inc., Liberia Marketing Association, and GIZ. Exciting news from our Employment Promotion Programme! Fruit and vegetable processing centres were officially handed over to the communities of Koinadugu and Falaba Districts and will enhance local agriculture, productivity, and boost economic resilience. The centres are built by the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) with funding from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, KfW. The GIZ provided additional equipment such as tricycles, motorbikes, desktops, printers, generators, water wells and trained beneficiaries of each processing center.     NaCSA Commissioner Ernest Ndomania and GIZ Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor Kefilwe Kosan highlighted the strong partnership and its positive impact on local communities. Four new One Health Committees have been established in Kailahun (Jawie and Upper Bambara Chiefdom) and Pujehun (Kpanga and Soro Gbema Chiefdom) as per the One Health Governance Manual 2023-2028. These are the first ever in these districts! 🏥🌍 One Health promotes collaborative efforts across multiple disciplines to boost rapid detection and response to infectious disease outbreaks. 📸 The first picture shows the District One Health Coordinator of Pujehun in Kpanga. The group picture shows the newly established One Health Committee of Soro Gbema, including the Paramount Chief, Section Chief, district and national One Health Advisor, the religious, women’s and youth leader, community animal health, and community health workers, the provincial health unit in-charge, traditional healer, chiefdom police officer and the GIZ technical advisor, amongst others.
