The 93% Club reposted this
10 years ago, I graduated uni with literally no idea what I wanted to do with my career. I was a Yellowbelly from Lincoln, questioning if there were more hills (literally and metaphorically) for me to climb elsewhere. Like many people without a ready made network of support and advice surrounding them, I was left to my own devices to figure out my place in the world of work. After a 4 month stint in Australia, a year back with my parents (having spent all my savings in Australia) and a dozen applications to random roles that gave me rejections without feedback (or where there was feedback, that I was 'raw' or lacked 'polish') eventually led me to London. It was here that I unironically, and completely by chance started to build my career in early careers and graduate recruitment. If I’m honest, at the time, I don't think I really felt like anything was wrong with the system, just that it was the luck of the draw as to why some people got offers and some people didn’t. Then, in 2020, I saw this sea of red burst onto my LinkedIn feed and I was introduced to The 93% Club, where thousands of students and professionals across the UK were mobilising to get more state educated students into top jobs. Fast forward a few years, and I have learnt and seen a lot. I also had the opportunity to meet Sophie and watch her and the team at 93% do something different with social mobility. Despite their size, I watched them punch above their weight, becoming the UK’s largest state school student and professionals network. Not to mention, their LinkedIn content was 10/10. I'll admit, I was feeling a bit jealous about not being involved… Until now. Last year I saw a role advertised to lead the Club’s strategic partnerships, and I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity to apply. I'm now a few weeks into my new role and the Club has lived up to every expectation. Community, network, bold thinking, and a wicked sense of humour are at the core of everything we do, and it’s been incredible to see the dedicated team work with companies who are serious about driving real change for state-educated students and professionals. So far, I’ve loved (see picture) being part of a small but high-performing team—and, more than anything, championing the charity's mission: to transform what it means to be state educated in Britain. I can’t wait to meet more of our partners and dive into our industry-leading events in the coming weeks. Oh, and if you're curious about The 93% Club, drop me a message—I’d love to chat! #StateSchoolProud
