Harthill Primary School's Year 4 class made a visit to our Harthill Reservoir Spillway project before it reopened to the public. Saffron Ramsey started the morning with a short presentation on "What Is Civil Engineering?" and followed with a Lego construction activity. Year 4 met our Site Manager, Iain Bielby, on site who organised a demonstration of the machinery used on site from a distance for the pupils. A E Yates Ltd. donated the Lego construction to Year 4 and we also gifted the PPE and goody bags to the pupils which they were allowed to take home after school. What a fantastic day! Day 2 of Strictly Highways kicked off with a welcome from Paula, who greeted attendees back to the Winter Gardens for another day of insights and discussions. The opening session was delivered by Main Conference Partner A E Yates Ltd., represented by Mark Lesley, Compliance Manager, and Su Brant Head of Preconstruction. AE Yates, established in 1870 in Bolton, offers a wide range of in-house specialisms in construction. Using an audience participation app, they posed several thought-provoking questions. In response to the first question, "Would you recommend this industry to your children?" only 30% of the audience said they would, citing perceptions of low pay, dirty work, for people with limited academic skills. This feedback reflects a larger issue in the industry: the aging workforce and the loss of skills through retirement. Over the next 10-15 years, the sector is expected to lose 500,000 workers, with only 15% of the workforce likely to continue working past retirement age - significantly lower than the 29% average across all sectors. A significant decline was also noted in the overall construction workforce, which has fallen from 3.1million to 2.05million in last 5 years. While percentage of women in the industry has increased and gender pay gap has narrowed, the Construction Industry Training Board reports that an additional 251,000 workers are needed by 2028 to fill the skills gap. This highlights urgent need for action to attract and retain talent within our sector. Another critical point raised was the ongoing challenge of recruitment. The construction industry currently has around 200,000 job vacancies per year, with 36,000 live vacancies this month alone. Additionally, the sector faces the estimated loss of 210,000 workers to other industries, retirement, or death. The cost of recruiting and training new employees is significant. How do we recruit more effectively and retain talent? Is there a better way of using existing skills, or upskilling current employees to help bridge the gap? The discussion then shifted to improving retention, with the easiest solutions identified as clear progression pathways and better pay scales. AE Yates shared several measures they have implemented to improve retention, including: - Embracing the cyclical movement of under 35s, providing secondments or similar on rotation to gain wider experience. - Collaborating with supply chain partners to share resources. - Implementing succession planning and career pathways. - Conducting regular skills gap analyses to identify needed skills. - Embracing transferable skills and new technologies to help drive innovation. - Transitioning to an employee-owned organisation. Finally, attendees were asked if their organisations had a strategic plan in place to address the skills gap. Over 50% admitted they did not, leaving much food for thought. For those that did have a plan, the effectiveness of such strategies was a key consideration for further reflection.
