  • What a Year It’s Been! As the year comes to a close and the festive season is upon us, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the past 12 months here at Askew Cavanna. This year, we were thrilled to welcome Fin to the team, bringing fresh energy and expertise to our practice. Looking ahead, we’re also preparing to wish Stefania Intorcia all the best as she heads off on maternity leave in the new year, we can’t wait to hear all about her next big (little) adventure! The past month alone has been filled with some very exciting project updates that will be shaping the year ahead: ✅ Planning permission granted for BSWN, marking a big step forward for the project, and we are now gearing up for starting on site in Spring next year. ✅ BSWN's Annual General Meeting, an inspiring evening where Claire was able to share insights and updates with all stakeholders. ✅ New project! We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been selected to work with St Werburgh’s City Farm for their new masterplan. The project incorporates retrofit, community engagement, and has a focus on sustainability -all the things we love! ✅ 5 community building retrofits in Worcester are nearing completion, marking a proud moment for our team’s commitment to inclusive, community-focused design, helping to shape the future for young people. As we head into 2025, we’re filled with gratitude for our team, our collaborators, and our clients and wish everyone a restful holiday season. Happy Holidays from all of us at Askew Cavanna ✨🎄 #designstudio #sustainabledesign #community

  • Project Milestone: Building Block Two at Dines Green Community Centre Last week, Claire Miller and Katie Williams travelled to Worcester to celebrate a project milestone at Building Block Two, with a successful site tour as the concrete pour was underway! A huge thank you to Barnwood Limited for arranging the event and everyone who joined. It was great to share the progress with all who have contributed along the way, and share the developing project with local counsellors. Onward to the next phase! #Architecture #CommunityBuilding #SkillsCentre

  • Definitely go along next year if you haven't been before, so much to see and learn from the wonderful residents of #Bristol! #retrofit #architects #design #sustainabledesign

Sustainable, warm, and cheaper to run—imagine transforming your home to tick all three boxes? 🌱 What an inspiring day at the Bristol Green Open Homes 2024 event! We love working with residents to retrofit their homes, enhancing thermal comfort while driving down energy bills. So seeing firsthand how homeowners have integrated heat pumps, solar panels, insulation, and natural, breathable materials was reinvigorating for us, and highlighted just how achievable sustainable living can be. Each home we visited had a unique approach to creating greener spaces, proving that from the small to large scale, retrofitting has a powerful impact. In the coming months we plan to share more about our own retrofit projects—both personal and professional—so keep an eye out for updates and inspiration! #SustainableLiving #GreenEnergy #ClimateAction #GreenOpenHomes

  • Did you know that Somerset peatlands store more than all the world's forests combined?! Last week, we attended an RIBA Somerset event in collaboration with The Somerset Wildlife Trust on the Avalon Marshes. The event focused on the importance of the ongoing management of peatlands on the Somerset levels for maintaining biodiversity and environmental health. How does peat benefit the planet I hear you ask? Peatlands store approximately 30% of the world’s soil carbon, despite covering only about 3% of the earth's land surface! Acting as a significant carbon sink, peatlands help mitigate climate change through storing large amounts of carbon dioxide. Peatlands support unique ecosystems, providing habitats for diverse plant and animal species. Peat helps filter and improve water quality, and prevent flooding by absorbing excess rainwater. With such positive impacts for carbon, water and biodiversity, it's clear to see why Somerset Wildlife Trust are working with local communities to protect and preserve peatlands, forging a new future for Somerset. #ecosystems #biodiversity #peatland

  • Listed Building Consent secured! We’re pleased to share that we’ve secured Listed Building Consent for a Grade II Listed former ‘Ciderhouse’ in Herefordshire! The essential repair works will ensure the longevity of the buildings surviving historic elements and prevent further decay. Farmsteads make a major contribution to the richly varied character of the countryside and illustrate the long history of farming and settlement in the English landscape. Growing of apples for cider has been significant in Herefordshire and parts of Worcestershire from the medieval period, becoming large-scale from the mid-17th century, resulting in cider houses featuring in many farm settings in this area. The ‘Ciderhouse’ is part of Ashe Ingen Court House, dated back to the late 16th century or early 17th century, and was probably built in the 17th century. The works look to preserve the authenticity and integrity of the historic building, maintaining its original character and features. Favouring conservation over restoration, the key principles to the repair works will involve:  - an emphasis on minimal intervention, - selection of traditional materials, - use of well-established techniques and materials,  - prioritising reversible interventions, - sustainable solutions that minimise energy consumption and carbon emissions, - respecting and seeing value in the buildings age and patina Thanks to Stefania Intorcia, our in-house conservation expert, and Structural Solutions UK for their support, we’re excited to see this charming little barn bought back to life! #Conservation #Heritage #ListedBuilding #HistoricEngland

  • Did you know that Bristol has been an independent County for 650 years? 'Bristol 650’ has seen a year long series of events celebrating all things Bristol to commemorate this remarkable anniversary. Coordinated by the inspiring Bristol Ideas , and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. For a long time we have been dedicated to understanding the significance of local (built and unbuilt) heritage, and how it can act as a vehicle through which local identities and community cohesion can be strengthened. Working alongside Local Learning and the Hillfield’s community, we explored how local heritage could create a community atlas - showing how Bristol has grown. The workshop built on the Hillfields Homes for Heroes project, and saw local residents come together to celebrate Bristol’s first garden suburb by recreating the gardens through model making and storytelling. Models showcased mini-allotments and birds in ponds, and the community ‘washing line’ rounded up the workshop, where residents shared their past stories and hopes for the future of their City.   The collaborative activity bought people together, young and old, allowing them to share a sense of place and identify what is important to residents today. #heritagefund #collaborativedesign #communityengagement #Bristol
