Yesterday, the Smart Cities Marketplace hosted a webinar on "Unlocking Private Sector Finance for Smart Cities". The event brought together a diverse range of stakeholders to explore the growing role of the private sector in financing decarbonization efforts and sustainable urban projects. Led by Tommaso Buso, Associate at BwB, and David Papp, Principal Consultant at Technopolis Group, the webinar featured insights from Delphine Queniart, a long-time banker and Executive Director at BwB. The session offered a fresh perspective on private-sector interventions and the crowding in of private capital for public projects, examining various financing instruments like green loans, sustainability-linked loans, special purpose vehicles, and city funds. Key learnings included: 🔵 The mechanics behind deploying these instruments, their advantages/disadvantages, and best practices 🔵 Criteria private investors use to evaluate a project's bankability, illustrated through sustainable bonds, PPPs, and blended finance examples 🔵 Insights from the new Climate City Capital Hub, launched in June 2024, to support cities in accessing finance for sustainable urban projects The webinar underscored the critical need for public-private collaboration to bridge the funding gap and drive greener, more liveable cities. As urban decarbonisation becomes a priority, innovative financing solutions that leverage private capital will be crucial. As we wrap up an eventful #ClimateWeekNYC, we are proud of the meaningful conversations and innovative solutions that emerged. 🌍 Our event, '𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵: 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀,' featured three insightful panel discussions: - Integrating climate policy with sustainable development - Overcoming barriers to capital flow - Expanding nature-based solutions in the Global South We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the panelists, volunteers, and collaborators for making this event possible. Your contributions drove powerful conversations about overcoming barriers and fostering cross-sector collaboration. The climate finance and decarbonization landscape is fragmented, as evident from our panel discussion. However, this underscores PET's mission: creating a platform to connect stakeholders and enable climate finance flow for on-ground impact. Some of our key takeaways included: 1️⃣ 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗽𝘀: Lack of 'bankable' projects hinders investment, especially in the Global South. Climate Week NYC highlighted early-stage investment and de-risking initiatives bridging this gap. PET is formalizing partnerships to catalyze nature-based project finance. 2️⃣ 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀: Despite uncertainty, stakeholders reaffirmed carbon markets' potential for transformative change. Commitments from ICVCM, VCMI, and initiatives like Symbiosis coalition show promise. 3️⃣ 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Platforming diverse stakeholders ensures a just transition. Let's collaborate to create resilient ecosystems and drive impactful climate action in the Global South! Thank you to all involved. Stay tuned for updates on our partnerships and initiatives. 🌱 fatima khushnud Hasan Anwer Saqib Sohail Matteo Scalabrino Chania Frost Kristina Elinder Liljas John Ambler Sohail Ali Naqvi Priyanka Khanna Marco Serena Pollination Cascale #ClimateAction #NetZeroPakistan #GlobalSouth #SustainableDevelopment #NatureFinance #PakistanEnvironmentTrust

💡 How can financial innovation tackle place-based decarbonization? BwB’s Associate, Tommaso Buso, and Connected Places Catapult Director, Steve Turner, joined the annual Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance (CCFLA) assembly at #ClimateWeekNYC to address this pressing issue. Starting at local scale, Steve presented insights from the Net Zero Neighbourhood (NZN) model. He discussed the challenges of engaging with #localgovernments and energy companies, as well as the positive reception from #citizens in understanding how to scale building retrofitting and attract investor interest. Tommaso, on the other hand, highlighted the solutions offered by the Climate City Capital Hub to bridge the existing €650 billion #financinggap for European city #decarbonization. Launched in June 2024, the Hub is a unique innovation in the field, delivering end-to-end assistance to #cities. The Hub revolves around the following key features: 1️⃣ Transaction-focused approach The Hub will facilitate transactions through four specific services: City Finance Specialists, the City Finance Framework, the Neutral Capital Center, and Technical Assistance. 2️⃣ Hub neutrality The Hub does not charge transaction fees. It is neutral and non-competitive, allowing cities to retain the entirety of the invested capital for high-impact projects. 3️⃣  Climate alignment The Hub is focused on climate-aligned projects only, prioritising those with the highest potential for decarbonisation. The session was enriched by contributions from Mariana Silva from the Global Infrastructure Facility and Marie Lam - Frendo of Meridiam, along with a robust Q&A session. 🤝 Special thanks to Alastair Mayes, John Michael LaSalle, and Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance (CCFLA) for expertly hosting and moderating the discussion. ➡️ More information about the Hub can be found at https://lnkd.in/dJw23aia ➡️ To contact us regarding the Capital Hub or other services, visit https://lnkd.in/dByKxe-f ICLEI Europe Climate Policy Initiative Benjamin Bartle Leslie Labruto Jason Mitchell Catherine Talbot Smart Cities Marketplace #NetZeroCities #UrbanFinance #GreenFinance
