About us
The Climate Governance Initiative is a non-profit dedicated to mobilising boards to accelerate the transition to net zero and build climate resilience. We develop and support a global network that empowers and mobilises board directors on every continent to take climate action by enhancing their knowledge and skills in climate governance. We are a rapidly growing global network with Chapters in over 70 countries worldwide, reaching more than 100,000 chairs, non-executive and independent directors. The Climate Governance Initiative is developed in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and our work builds on the World Economic Forum’s Principles for Effective Climate Governance. Board directors have a thousand competing priorities for their companies, but in our world it often comes down to this: are we supposed to focus on profit, or planet? Chapter Zero, the UK Chapter in the Climate Governance Initiative network, has launched a powerful advertising campaign in the Financial Times. The first ad challenges that binary choice: it’s polar bears, for sure. But it’s money too. #ClimateAction #ItsABusinessArgumentToo
Money or polar bears? Pick one. Happy shareholders, or the continued existence of Ursus Maritimus? Business versus planet. Tough choice. But is it even a real one? We believe that the trade-off between action on climate and doing business is a false one. It’s possible to be successful and sustainable at the same time. Or, in other words, it’s feasible for both businesses and the polar bear to be going concerns. Climate action. It’s not just a moral argument. It’s a business one too. ~ This is the first of six full-page adverts published in the Financial Times, with brilliant creative by Mother. They have been designed to inspire action on climate change. Because Chapter Zero is part of a global network, the Climate Governance Initiative, we are confident that the campaign will inspire action around the world. Keep your eyes peeled for the rest of the series in print and on our channels in the coming weeks. Congratulations to Climate Governance Initiative Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors on the success of yesterday's Climate Governance Forum, which saw nearly 2,000 board members attend. Thank you Rebekah Cheney for pulling together key takeaways from the conference on 🌏 #climate and 🐋 #nature, including the fact that we need to communicate the benefits of #ESG in a way that shows business 'value' rather than because of our 'values'. Read her takeaways below 👇 #climategovernance #CGF24
Nearly 2000 Australian Board Members today showed their commitment to successfully navigating business through climate change and nature & biodiversity loss by attending the Climate Governance Forum #CGF24. Congratulations to the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Climate Governance Initiative Australia for convening an excellent series of panels. Key takeaways: 🌱 overseeing material risks and opportunities on climate and nature is no different to overseeing other material risks and opportunities. You need to know enough to understand them and you need business processes to manage them 🌱 disclosure of those material risks and opportunities must be meaningful and tell the story 🌱 ESG backlash is not as much of an issue in Australia as it is in the US but if we don’t communicate the benefits of ESG in way that shows business “value” rather than because of our “values” then a greater divide may arise 🌱 Mandatory nature related reporting is not on the government agenda but nature is a foreseeable risk and opportunity and directors are required to consider all foreseeable risks and opportunities Look out for our updated Directors Guide to Mandatory Climate Reporting which will be released soon. Sarah Barker, Christie Rourke, Laura Bacon, Louise Petschler, Anna Gudkov, Christian Gergis, Tom Imbesi, Jonathan Streng, David Rodgers, Chi Mun Woo, Victoria Whitaker, Paul Dobson, Katherine Wannan, Will Symons, Peter Holt, Kerry Cox, Noni Shannon, Anne Driver
