Through using innovative modern methods of construction in our Decarbonisation and Restoration projects, Conamar continues to provide efficient and sustainable buildings for the future. By utilising the Sylva CLT elements provided by Stora Enso & partner B&K Structures at Walworth Town Hall, 384 tonnes of greenhouse gases were avoided. Find out more below:

Walworth Town Hall is now complete! 👏 B&K Structures have designed and delivered a hybrid #CLT, #glulam and structural #steelwork solution at Walworth Town Hall, contributing to the meticulous redevelopment of this Grade II listed building. BKS’ works included the new lightweight CLT and glulam roof and structural steel mezzanine floor - utilising a #hybrid solution to facilitate the restoration work by combining long-term strength with minimal additional weight. Using #timber for the roof combined with strengthening steelwork, the solution was to restore the original elements and further modernise the building with new timber vertical extensions and roofs, a new mezzanine floor, and a new lift core. The roof - located on a concrete ring beam cast atop the old brickwork - has opened new spaces and provides flexibility for future use. After being ravaged by fire in 2013, Southwark Council and developer General Projects sought to reinvent Walworth Town Hall for the 21st century. Taking care to retain, restore and revitalise many of the original 1894 features of the main chamber, the aim was to return the historic town hall to its former glory as one of London’s truly iconic civic buildings. The redevelopment has delivered a modern re-interpretation of the space, opening it up for the local community once more while also protecting its historic beauty. Significantly, the decision to utilise engineered timber to restore Walworth Town Hall - a building previously ravaged by fire - highlights the project team’s strong understanding of, and confidence in, timber as a material. B&K Hybrid Solutions are proud to share our involvement in 123 Golden Lane, an exciting #refurbishment scheme in the heart of London which will deliver 20,000 sq ft of premium office space. The existing Victorian building will be refurbished, with the existing top floor removed and replaced with two additional floors of new workspaces, taking advantage of the lightweight benefits of a hybrid timber-steel solution. BKHS will deliver the #CLT, #glulam and #steelwork rooftop extension works on behalf of Conamar. Our package includes a steelwork and glulam frame with CLT floor decks, supplied by Stora Enso, to the rooftop areas, and metal decking at ground floor within the existing structure. The project has been designed to present a sensitive and considered refurbishment that meets the needs of modern-day occupiers whilst maintaining the character of the existing building. Timber has been specified to limit the load and enable the retention of as much of the existing structure as possible, while minimising the embodied carbon of the project. 123 Golden Lane is demonstrative of the client Bywater Properties’ commitment to low carbon development and refurbishment through its use of sustainable and bio-based materials. Bywater believe this approach - creative reuse of heritage buildings of merit - is an important part of addressing both climate issues and finding opportunities for positive social impact in the community. On completion the building aims to achieve an upfront carbon of between 264kgCO2e/m2 and 304gCO2e/m2, compared to a newbuild norm in the order of 1000kg CO2e/m2. 🔨🏛️ Restoring Walworth Town Hall 🏛️🔨 We’re proud to be part of the restoration of Walworth Town Hall, ensuring its historic charm is preserved while upgrading for modern energy efficiency.   What we’ve done: ✅ Pitched slate roofing with lead works on the Council Chamber and Pavilion ✅ Single-ply flat roof systems with a 20-year warranty ✅ Thermal insulation with Rockwool Multifix DD Insulation ✅ 600 x 300 Penrhyn Heather Blue slates across the roof, and 500 x 300 scalloped slates for the Turret Roofs For the lead work, Code 5 was used for ridge, hip, and crown, while Code 6 covered valleys, box gutters, and dormer cheeks. Materials were carefully selected for both aesthetic appeal and durability, working closely with the client and architect to ensure everything was perfectly integrated. The service will take place at Cambridge Crematorium on Thursday, 13th February, at 2:30 PM. Rachael’s family are also working on providing a live stream of the service.
