We provide compassionate care and support for people with a life-limiting illness in our 700sq mile community.

About us

We believe every life is incredibly precious, and no one should face death alone. At Dorothy House, we offer an exceptional level of practical, physical and emotional care for those in our community who are approaching death, as well as their family and friends. In other words, we’ve got you. We know death can feel scary and unfair. Although we can’t make it go away, we’re here to provide whatever support our patients need to face it without fear. We’re by their side, as much or as little as they need us - whether that means hands-on help, advice or just a cup of tea with someone who gets it. We’re here for friends and families too. It means so much to our patients to know their loved ones will be supported. And, by dealing with the everyday practical issues, we help everyone find more time and space for the things that mean the most. The Dorothy House standard of care reaches deep into our community. By sharing our knowledge and expertise we help people to take control and plan for the end of their lives, and equip more people in our society with the skills and courage to provide the end of life care each of us deserves. While we support our community, they support us. We are funded by people living in the communities we serve. Together, we can protect everyone’s right to a meaningful life and a peaceful death.

Updates

  • A big thank you to Pipster Solutions Ltd, who have been busy raising funds for us after they nominated us as their 2024 Charity of the Year! Pippa and Jo from Team Pipster recently met with Chelsea from our Fundraising team here at the Hospice to present us with a cheque for a fantastic £1,075! Over the last year, the team have been taking part in a whole host of our events to raise money for us - they've done the Midnight Walk, Frome Running Festival, The Big Avon Paddle, Paws in the Park, and the Jingle Jog! Jo from the team proposed Dorothy House as the company's Charity of the Year as a way of honouring her dad's memory, after he was cared for by our team 20 years ago. We're so grateful to the wonderful #TeamPipster for supporting us throughout 2024 - thank you so much! 💜 Nominating us as your Charity of the Year is one of many ways in which your business can support the Hospice, and you'll be standing with us together in the face of adversity, helping to protect our vital core services. • “It’s really important, especially for younger people, to have been exposed to the kind of language we use around death.” This week is Children's Mental Health Week, so we're revisiting 'Lifecycles,' a film Dorothy House proudly featured in for an episode of Sky Kids FYI. Filmed at the Hospice last year, we explore our Interactive Nature Trail with Lucy, whose dad was cared for on our Inpatient Unit, and Julia Davidson from our Family Services Team. In the film, Lucy tells us about the support she has received from our team, and how the Nature Trail has provided her with a peaceful space to process her grief. We also hear from Julia, who speaks about the importance of knowing the right and wrong things to say when helping children to process their grief. • In light of World Cancer Day today, we're re-visiting an incredibly powerful episode of The Dorothy House Podcast, where we chat to Jo and Anthony Millard, who share the story of their beloved son, Benj, who died less than eight months after being diagnosed with bowel cancer. As he fought his battle with courage, Benj found his way to Dorothy House, where he was showered with love, kindness and compassion during his final days. In this deeply personal and emotional episode, Jo and Anthony share their journey, their memories of Benj and his passion for life, and the difficulties they faced in dealing with their loss. • Alongside our colleagues across the sector, we will campaign for change to ensure hospices are able to secure fair, long-term funding solutions. However, we have an immediate critical fundraising shortfall which the recent government announcement of a one-off cash injection will not completely address. That’s why we’re calling on anyone who might one day need our services to stand with Dorothy House in the face of adversity, helping to protect our vital core services now and into the future. "An outcome where you had someone choose an assisted death because of a real or imagined fear that they couldn't get the right support would be a moral and practical disgrace." - Toby Porter, CEO, Hospice UK. Thank you to the committee for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill for bringing the hospice sector's voice to the discussion on this important bill.

  • You may remember a few weeks ago, we introduced you to Linda and Krystyna, two of our amazing Hospice at Home carers who were starting the new year with a splash! Alongside two of their friends, Linda and Krystyna took on a deep dive in the Red Sea in Egypt, all to raise funds for Dorothy House. We're pleased to share these amazing snaps from their trip, and the news that their fundraising total now stands at a fantastic £1,442! If you'd still like to support their fundraising efforts, we've included the link to their JustGiving page in the comments below. Have you been inspired to raise funds for Dorothy House? We have a whole host of events and challenges you can get on board with this year, including our brand-new Bath City Zipline, and our biggest overseas trek ever taking place in 2026 to Peru! However you decide to fundraise, your support will help to protect our vital core services now and into the future, ensuring that people in our community facing death do so with the specialist care and support they deserve. #TogetherInAdversity #FundraisingChallenge #HospiceHeroes

  • The award-winning Men’s Walk to Support returns on Saturday 8 March! One of our biggest annual fundraising events, this 8-mile walk from Winsley to Bath will bring together men from all different walks of life to share their experiences of grief and bereavement while raising funds to support the work of Dorothy House, helping to protect our vital core services. This year, we’ve got plenty of fantastic opportunities for local businesses to join us too! Whether you team up with your male colleagues to take on the walk, or support with marshalling along the route, we’d love to hear from you. We’re also looking for companies to come on board as sponsors for this much-loved event, with different packages available to suit you. Check out our Sponsorship pack to find out more! #WalkForACause #TogetherInAdversity #MensWalkToSupport
