Future Island-Island
Regenerative Design
Shaping a greener future through design. AHRC funded Green Transition Ecosystems research on Rathlin Island, N.I.
About us
Future Island-Island is an AHRC funded project that brings together community members, academics, and practitioners to co-create design-led research for a greener, more sustainable Northern Ireland economy. Through the lens of Rathlin, Northern Ireland's only populated offshore island, we’re exploring innovative design and digital technologies to valorise waste as a commodity, develop sustainable tourism practices, and envision new possibilities for education and policy-making that will benefit everyone. Future Island-Island is one of four UK Green Transition Ecosystems, each funded up to £4.625m and part of the flagship funding strand of the £25M AHRC Future Observatory: Design the Green Transition programme (AH/Y003780/1).

It was fantastic to have Future Island-Island researcher Alison Gault discuss the innovative potential of natural wool materials at Showcase Ireland on Monday, taking a moment to highlight the work to transform Rathlin Island's wool into sustainable fibers, fabrics, crafts, and products. 🧶 #wool #sustainability #design
An insightful panel discussion on how Donegal is taking its wool heritage into exciting new directions. From the quest for Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for Donegal Tweed to the growing demand for sustainable, innovative uses of Irish grown wool; discover how local businesses are blending tradition with forward-thinking ideas. Our panelists will dive into the unique opportunities emerging for wool in Donegal and beyond to discuss how this mix of craftsmanship and creativity is shaping the future for Irish grown wool. Panel includes Patrick Temple; Magee Weaving, Chris Weiniger; Donegal Yarns, Léila Worth, Designer & Trainee Weaver, Kevin Dooley; Dooleys Wool. Moderated by Alison Gault, Ulster University and Interim Chair, Irish Grown Wool Council. #ShowcaseIreland #ShowcaseIreland2025

Did you know? Over the festive season, millions of electronic items are bought across the UK, creating a surge in electronic waste (e-waste). 🎁 As part of Future Island-Island’s Work Package 1: Product Waste Ecosystems, we’re focusing on how circularity in waste can help tackle e-waste challenges. By repairing and repurposing electronics, we can extend the lifespan of devices and reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste (WEEE). Through innovative solutions, we aim to build sustainable systems that not only keep electronics in use longer but also make waste management more efficient. This year, let’s think about sustainability and how we can reduce, reuse, and recycle our electronics.💚 Here are some simple tips to celebrate a more sustainable holiday season: 🌍 Choose high-quality items or repair damaged items to make things last. 💡Upgrade to energy-efficient LED lights and donate or repurpose old chargers. 📱Trade in, donate, or responsibly recycle old tech when upgrading devices. 🎮 Consider second-hand or upgrade options for gaming and entertainment gadgets. 🌿Opt for eco-friendly self-care products and use e-waste schemes to recycle. ♻️Donate, repair, or recycle unused kitchen gadgets to keep the giving spirit alive. Let’s make this a season of thoughtful choices and lasting impact. Together, we can deck the halls and not the landfill, celebrating a sustainable Christmas that brings joy to our loved ones and care for our planet. 🌍 ___________ The Future Island-Island project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and supported by the Design Museum's Future Observatory. We're delighted to have attended Design HOPES work-in-progress display opening and discussion events at V&A Dundee, celebrating their one-year milestone! It was fantastic to connect with researchers and representatives from the Design HOPES team to examine key questions at the heart of the Green Transition in health and care. The day offered an opportunity to explore objects and artefacts that highlight how design-led research propels sustainable innovation in this space. These sparked meaningful conversations about the challenges and solutions shaping the sustainable transition for NHS Scotland and emphasised the vital connection between healthy people and a healthy planet. 💡Design Thinking in Action: Empowering Youth Workers to Shape Sustainable Futures💡 Portrush Youth Centre, Co. Antrim, became a hub of creativity and collaboration as we joined project partner The B!G Idea for an impactful Design Thinking workshop in collaboration with the Education Authority (Northern Ireland) Causeway Coast and Glens youth worker team. The session welcomed eight dedicated youth workers alongside five members of the FII team to explore how innovative methodologies can transform youth engagement. How the day unfolded: ☀️ Morning: Youth workers were introduced to the principles of Design Thinking—learning how this creative framework can spark solutions and enhance youth engagement. ⚡ Afternoon: A design sprint put theory into practice, equipping youth workers with actionable tools to implement in their programmes and empower young people as changemakers in their communities. Thank you to our workshop facilitators Siobhan, Niamh, and Méabh from The Big Idea - Ireland for sharing their insights and expertise with us, building on their extensive experience introducing Design Thinking to schools. Together, we explored how to adapt these principles for youth work settings in the Causeway Coast and Glens area, reimagining ways to address challenges and inspire meaningful action. We're excited to continue this work in partnership with the B!G iDEA and Big Motive as part of FII's Work Package 4: Designing Sustainable Futures Education, combining academic insights and local expertise to empower young people to tackle environmental challenges. ________________ This activity is part of the Future Island-Island project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and supported by the Design Museum's Future Observatory.
