The Elizabeth line: line wide design has won the RIBA Stirling Prize 2024 — an amazing recognition for the incredible team that realised this project, which opened in May 2022 after 12 years of design. It is one of the most significant contributions to London's transportation for over 20 years but is also transformative for so many people's lives, highlighting the role design plays in elevating our every day. 'Descending into the colossal network of tunnels feels like entering a portal to the future, where the typical commuter chaos is transformed into an effortless experience. This is architecture of the digital age — a vast scheme that utilises cutting-edge technology to create distinctive spatial characteristics and experiences. It rewrites the rules of accessible public transport, and sets a bold new standard for civic infrastructure, opening up the network and by extension, London, to everyone.' said Muyiwa Oki PRIBA, RIBA President, on behalf of the jury. Congratulations to the entire team behind this highly collaborative project: the line-wide design team of Grimshaw, Maynard Design Consultancy, AtkinsRéalis, EQUATION Lighting Design, Crossrail International, and the architects across the 10 new stations including John McAslan + Partners, WW+P Architects, Hawkins\Brown, AHR (formerly Aedas), WilkinsonEyre, BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd), Adamson Associates Architects, Allies and Morrison and Fereday Pollard. Grimshaw’s Melbourne studio has relocated to a thriving Central Business District location at 150 Lonsdale Street. Melbourne was the first studio in Australia and New Zealand, established in 2002 to service our project win of Southern Cross Station. It was the base from which our business in Australasia grew with studios appearing later in Sydney and Auckland. Now, our fourth Melbourne studio home reflects the maturity of the practice, enjoying a treetop aspect and next door to Melbourne’s newest urban park and a significant heritage precinct. The Melbourne studio is led by Andrew Perez, Partner appointed Managing Partner in 2023. #grimshaw #melbournearchitecture
