Many are aware I have a voluntary role as the Chair of an Employment Council at HMP Hindley in Lancashire. Employment Councils were established by Lord Timpson to reduce re-offending in the UK. The statistics of those re-offending upon release between those in employment and those not in employment are very significant. Its really important that those serving prison sentences are inspired to get employment on release, and those being released get jobs in industry - Did you know 80% of all crime is reoffending. As a prison the fantastic team an HMP Hindley have lots of engagement with employers across a range of sectors but when it comes to delivering real social value and real social impact I often think the Highways sector is right up there with the very best. Yesterday, National Highways, in partnership with HW Martin (Traffic Management) Limited , delivered an immersive Traffic Management learning session for the men as part of getting them doing practical 'hands on' activity in sectors where industry has skills shortages. Using virtual technology, presentations, and hands-on experience, we showcased what it takes to be a Traffic Management (TM) operative and the career pathways available. The guys were also able to design and create road signage for the strategic road network, giving them a real sense of impact and how the role can be creative design, hands on and fulfilling. We also took an Impact Protection Vehicle into the prison yard, where the men had the unique opportunity to lay out a TM zone using cones, frames, and traffic lights. This enabled them to gain first-hand experience of the skills required on the job. Over 90% of the men involved said they felt inspired to take a job on release in the highways sector doing traffic management or more generally in construction sector. It also gave HW Martin an opportunity to see the men in a 'hands on' work environment - which is more natural for this type of work than an 'interview'. In the coming week a number of follow up calls will take place regarding employment opportunities on release. For those men being offered roles they will get training and certification so they are able to start work Day 1 on release! We continue monthly sessions at HMP Hindley, providing valuable learning opportunities, with the vision to creating skilled residents that are ready for employment upon release. Want to get involved? If you or your organisation can offer training or employment please drop me a message. A huge thanks to everyone who made this possible, especially Chris Nuttall , James Hunt and the team at HW Martin (Traffic Management) Limited ! #NationalHighways #HMPHindley #TrafficManagement #SocialValue #SkillsForLife #morethanroads David Shaw Jennifer Ebanks Jo Wilkes Rachael Atkin Donna Howard CMgr MCMI 🏳️🌈Sarah Hough Andy Butterfield New Futures Network Louise Parr
