This week, our Principal Investigator, Sara Walker visited Japan to attend the prestigious Royal Society event, which brought together eminent scientists and researchers from around the world. During the visit, our director had the opportunity to explore Japan's advanced hydrogen refuelling stations, which are part of the country's ambitious efforts to lead in hydrogen technology and promote sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, the visit included a tour of Science Tokyo, which is at the forefront of scientific research and innovation, contributing significantly to advancements in various fields such as life sciences, engineering, and data science Fruitful discussions were also held at the Science Council of Japan, the representative organization for Japanese scientists across all disciplines. These discussions focused on collaborative research opportunities and the development of science and technology for sustainability.

Recently representatives from HI-ACT and UK-HyRES: Hub for Research Challenges in Hydrogen and Alternative Liquid Fuels had the privilege of joining a UK delegation to Berlin, engaging in high-impact discussions with leading German hydrogen research institutions. Our visit, supported by the British Embassy Berlin, was an invaluable opportunity to exchange insights on hydrogen innovation, system integration, and deployment pathways—key to accelerating the clean energy transition. Thank you to residents from Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven who participated in our HIACT community workshop last week! Participants explored local priorities for hydrogen development in South Wales, discussing safety, and how to strike a balance between infrastructure, nature and tourism. It was an informative day and we had fun creating collage maps reflecting local aspirations for the future. By meaningfully engaging communities around hydrogen infrastructure, we hope to help ensure hydrogen reflect local priorities and concerns". Gareth Thomas #Hydrogen #HydrogenInfrastructure

A thoroughly fruitful and insightful trip, huge thanks to everyone involved.
This week we welcomed a delegation from the British #hydrogen hubs UK-HyRES: Hub for Research Challenges in Hydrogen and Alternative Liquid Fuels and HI-ACT(Hydrogen Integration for Accelerated Energy Transitions) to Berlin. The aim was for the delegates to exchange with German hydrogen experts & to further develop UK-German #research & #innovation cooperation in this area of #sustainable #energy – an important element of our UK #Energy and #Climate Partnership with Germany. We kicked-off with an insightful discussion with a fantastic range of representatives from four different #Fraunhofer Institutes (Fraunhofer IEG, Fraunhofer IKTS, Fraunhofer IFAM, Fraunhofer-Institut für Windenergiesysteme) here at the British Embassy. The group also joined the H2 Forum, had the chance to hear from Projekträger Jülich about wider priorities and developments of Hydrogen research in Germany, and from Innovate UK about #Horizon Europe opportunities. On day two the delegation had the opportunity to visit the historic Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft and gain valuable insights into the institute’s cutting-edge research on hydrogen. Huge thank you to the Fritz Haber team for hosting us and allowing us to get a glimpse into their laboratories! The institute’s commitment to unravelling the fundamental principles of energy transformations is truly inspiring! Last but by no means least, we’d like to thank the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft for hosting an afternoon of fruitful discussions at their Head Offices in Berlin. The delegation was delighted to meet with representatives from Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Forschungszentrum Jülich and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. and discuss areas of potential collaboration. We couldn’t have imagined a better end to this productive delegation visit! Looking ahead, we are motivated to advance research and innovation on hydrogen technologies, to strengthen the UK-German scientific and technological collaboration to ensure a successful #NetZero energy transition.
