The IGA is the UK’s leading training and membership organisation for group analysis.

About us

The Institute of Group Analysis (IGA) is the leading provider of group analytic and group work training and the largest membership organisation for Group Analysts in the UK. Group Analysis is a powerful therapeutic medium that focuses on the relationship between the individual and the group, emphasising the essentially social nature of human experience. As a method of treatment, group analysis offers an approach that recognises how emotional, behavioural and psychological phenomena emerge in the context of our social groups. Carefully constituted analytic groups have a long record of helping people with personal problems and in promoting personal development. The IGA is a registered charity that offers professional and academic qualifications in Group Analysis and Group Work Practice across the country, providing education, short courses and continuing professional development for over 1,100 individuals each year. Alongside our core training programme the IGA also offers bespoke training and consultancy and a national clinical referral service for members of the public seeking therapy. As reflected in our comprehensive portfolio of trainings, the Group Analytic approach has profound implications for Group Work and organisational practice in a wide range of health, social and educational settings. Our philosophy is that as personal difficulties arise in groups, groups are the best place to explore, understand and try and resolve them. Group analysis aims to achieve a healthier integration of the individual in his or her network of relationships. It is an interactive approach and has many applications in the field of human relations, teaching, training and organisational consultancy.

  • 📌 You don't want to miss this event With two leading voices in healthcare – Dame Clare Gerada and Dr Rachel Gibbons – we will explore the profound complexities of the NHS A morning of keynote talks, small group discussions and a dynamic plenary session, we are examining its triumphs, challenges, and the intense pressures faced by those who work within it. It promises to be a deep dive into the pivotal role of the NHS in British society. Dame Clare Gerada will draw on over 35 years of experience, and reflect on the NHS's journey from its hopeful beginnings to its current struggles. As someone who has witnessed the NHS evolve, Clare will share her unique perspective on the paradox of the NHS as both a symbol of collective solidarity and a battleground for societal tensions. Dr. Rachel Gibbons will bring a psychoanalytical lens to the discussion, exploring the emotional and psychological dynamics that shape our collective relationship with the NHS. Through her extensive work in group analysis and psychotherapy, Rachel will provide insights into the psychological toll on healthcare workers, who often bear the brunt of these conflicting emotions and expectations. It's not just an event—it’s a call to reflect, discuss, and collectively reimagine the future of healthcare in the UK. 📆 Saturday 19th October 2024 🕘 9:00 am - 1:00 pm 📍 IGA students – £25.
