#Water is vital for farmers, fishers and boat operators from Mopti, Mali. But it's also at the center of a complex cycle: 👇: #ClimateChange ➡️ Droughts, erratic rainfall, changing tides, Niger River depletion ➡️ Water scarcity impacts fishing, farming, tourism ➡️ Food insecurity, income loss ➡️ Communities struggle to adapt ➡️ Resource competition intensifies ➡️ Conflicts arise ➡️ Increased vulnerability to climate change ♻️ We found ways to disrupt this repeating cycle through our work within the Water, Peace & Security partnership. Here’s how: 🔸 We brought three competing communities together for dialogue sessions where they could directly raise their concerns; 🔸 We helped them understand the reasons for inter-community tensions; 🔸 With our support, they developed best practices for using limited resources more equitably and sustainably. 💧 Water can be part of the problem but also part of the solution. Learn more about Mopti’s journey to smart water management from our story: https://lnkd.in/eWT_K2zk

💭 How can we restore #peace between communities divided by resource conflicts and grappling with #climatechange impact? We have an inspiring story from our work in Benue, Nigeria! The Jukun and Tiv tribes from Fiidi lived side by side for generations, yet worlds apart. Fishermen revolted against their neighbours, farmers and herders, over scarce water and land. Climate change increased these stresses even further. But they have found a path to cooperation and unity amidst these challenges through our “Powering Peace through Climate Action” project, implemented by our team at International Alert Nigeria and funded by Irish Aid Learn more about their remarkable journey of rediscovering peace from our story: https://lnkd.in/e8pWzEJV Key factors that enabled this success: 💬 We managed to bring the two communities together through dialogue sessions so that they could hear each other’s concerns and find common solutions 🌀 Jukuns and Tivs learned how climate change is worsening their tensions 📝 The two communities created a joint peace and climate adaptation plan that identifies how they use limited resources and collaborate for the benefit of all 🌾 Jukuns and Tivs also mastered sustainable agriculture and innovative farming methods that boosted economic opportunities and replaced older techniques that required to compete for limited resources 👉 Our main takeaway? When local communities lead their own reconciliation efforts and collaborate to tackle climate change impact, they can bring #peace and prosperity back to their shared spaces.

On #WorldHumanitarianDay, we honour the courage and dedication of humanitarian workers worldwide. It’s also a chance to reflect on the powerful synergy between humanitarian aid and #peacebuilding in creating a more stable and just world.   In these challenging times, providing immediate relief where it's needed most—often in the face of fear, safety risks, and intimidation—has never been more daunting. 🕊 As peacebuilders, our mission is to keep looking for ways out of this darkness so that large-scale humanitarian interventions are no longer necessary.   Our teams worldwide stand as your committed #PartnersInPeace: every day, we’re working to create conditions where long-term solutions are possible again. Where we can understand why conflicts happen in the first place and know how to prevent them. Where we can mend the torn fabric of society and ensure that the dignity of all people is respected – especially the most vulnerable.   Our gratitude and respect go to those who continue risking their lives in service to others. You embody the best of humanity. By working together as humanitarians and peacebuilders, we can bring #hope to those who need it most.

#DYK that our team in 🇷🇼 Rwanda produces a 🎙️ radio drama that blends entertainment and #education to promote unity and reconciliation? 📻 "Shirimpumu" (meaning "relieving minds and hearts" in Kinyarwanda) has aired on national radio since 2020. 👏 Each episode reaches 3-5 million Rwandans weekly and helps young people navigate complex conversations about their history with sensitivity and respect. Shirimpumu is built around the facts about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and the events surrounding it. It then corporates them into storytelling about real-life situations performed by actors: https://lnkd.in/eFgju6ix This unique format: 🙌 makes difficult conversations about sensitive topics a little easier, 💭 promotes critical thinking, and 🤗 invites listeners to reflect on their opinions and attitudes towards others. The show has a hotline number that allows listeners to share questions and feedback. One listener, whose parents were among the genocide perpetrators, said that Shirimpumu helped him understand the reasons for their imprisonment and reconcile with his community. Media can unite communities or deepen social divides. Our experience shows that #education and access to accurate information are essential to preventing conflicts and promoting lasting #peace. ❓ Have you used media and entertainment for #peacebuilding? Tell us about your experiences in comments👇 The Shirimpumu project is funded by USAID The photo shows young people from Sake, Eastern Province of Rwanda, who got to see Shirimpumu radio drama actors perform for their community.

Violence is on the rise in northwest #Nigeria. We’ve been supporting local communities in taking an active stand against ⛔ it. Thanks to our 🇳🇬 Nigeria team's efforts, 70 first responders from Tsafe, Birnin Magaji and Gusau in Zamfara State can now provide immediate psychological and social aid to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Zara’u, pictured in the photos, leads a safe space for women and girls affected by SGBV in her community. Along with fellow support workers, she attended a 2-day training where they learned about: 🔹Different forms that sexual and gender-based violence takes 🔹Influence of gender and cultural norms 🔹Ways to improve care for violence survivors 🔹Mechanisms to report violence while upholding the survivors’ confidentiality Find out more from the news report: https://bit.ly/3YfX7jg We believe that supporting survivors of SGBV and empowering them to seek justice is 🔑 to breaking cycles of violence and restoring #peace. We’d like to thank our partners from the Zamfara State Ministry of Women Affairs for their support. The training is part of our 'Samun adachi shi ne kwanciyar hankali' (Achieving Justice Promotes Stability) project, funded by the UK Integrated Security Fund (ISF). Paul N.
