Same player, new game... McCann Germany brought Alibaba.com to Paris, using the Olympics as an opportunity to increase brand awareness. The OOH campaign featured retired athletes like NBA star Tony Parker and showcased how these athletes continue their success even after their sports careers — now as entrepreneurs. The campaign is part of a rise in OOH ads during major sporting events and Jan Wilhelm, account director at McCann Germany said: “outdoor advertising is significantly more noticed in the context of these events. This can be due to the local concentration of advertising brands exceeding the usual level, or the recurring theme in various ads being consistent across brands. To stand out from the crowd, advertisers rely on particularly creative and attention-grabbing presentations, as demonstrated by Alibaba.com with its ‘Same Player, New Game’ campaign for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris." We're delighted that McCann has been named as the most successful UK agency at turning its Cannes Lions nominations into gold or Grand Prix awards, topping several categories this year. Although UK agencies overall were awarded 37% fewer golds or Grands Prix compared with 2023, as Polly McMorrow, chief executive at McCann London, reflected: “This year we witnessed never-seen-before wins from countries such as Iceland who won their first ever Lion for Olgerdin and Kazakhstan who won their first gold, for a powerful domestic violence campaign."
