The MIDLANDS AEROSPACE ALLIANCE and ITP Aero in Nottinghamshire hosted a roundtable for aerospace manufacturers to exchange views with East Midlands Combined County Authority Mayor Claire Ward and her team. The Mayor explained her economic priorities for the coming years, with a big focus on jobs. The aerospace business leaders reported that the industry is enjoying a period of robust growth offering the region exciting economic opportunities. Among the roundtable’s hot topics were the skills shortages and recruitment challenges that risk holding back growth, despite most companies taking on new apprentices each year. Follow-on themes included the efforts the industry is now making to make its workplaces more welcoming for a more diverse population than its traditional white male workforce, especially with growing female recruitment and career progression, and how to get the industry’s message about exciting aerospace careers out into schools. It was agreed to work together to address these issues in future. ITP Aero showed the visitors around their factory to see first-hand the superb manufacturing facilities at ITP Aero where skilled colleagues make high-tech jet engine combustion chambers and many other sophisticated engine components for Rolls-Royce engines that go on big Boeing and Airbus aircraft. The visit finished with Mayor Claire meeting a group of the latest ITP Aero apprentices and early careers staff. Ian Williamson, Lisa Charlesworth, Rob Mitchell, Sarah Wales, Sarah Kinrade, Wes Allen, Accrofab, Grace Atkinson, ATLAS Composite Technologies, Eamon Lyons, Dynamic Aerospace Fabrications Limited, Marie Cooper, Steve Cordon, CBE+, Stacy Denton-Beaumont, Boneham & Turner Ltd, Jason Thorpe, Hucknall Sheetmetal Engineering Ltd, Nicky Forster, Nasmyth, Claire Spencer, Niamh Carey, Jamie Jordan, Jacob Vivian, Andrew Mair.
