  • Agree or disagree, litter edition! Is it fine to throw your apple core out of the window? Whilst you may think it's biodegradable and 'good for the environment', it's actually harmful to animals who are lured to the roadside in search for food. Keep Britain Tidy estimates that 3 million animals are killed each year due to litter. Do your bit, take your rubbish home or use a bin. #GBSpringClean

  • 🚂 62 years ago today, the Beeching Report proposed the closure of around 6,000 route miles of Britain's rail network. Today, National Highways is proud to protect and maintain over 3,100 historic railway structures across Britain, many of which were built more than 100 years ago! 🎉 In this special year, as we celebrate Railway 200 - marking 200 years since the birth of modern railways - we're especially proud to be custodians of this incredible engineering heritage. 🏗️ From magnificent viaducts to unique bridges, we're working to ensure these incredible pieces of British engineering history are preserved and repurposed for future generations. Want to learn more about these structures and how we care for Britain's Historical Railways Estate? Watch our animation below! ⬇️ #BritishHeritage #Engineering #Railway200

  • Supporting economic growth is a key benefit of our road schemes. Our M3 J9 project is an example of this. The Rt Hon. Heidi Alexander MP, Secretary of State for Transport visited the scheme. She was welcomed by our Chief Executive Nick Harris, members of our project team and contractor VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd. Did you know that the junction is an important interchange, connecting the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth to the wider region? This scheme will improve safety, journey times and air quality in the area. It will also offer a range of environmental benefits. Learn more about the scheme on our website: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ehTXTSVz

  • Our prickly little friends helped many of us learn how to cross the road (stop, look and listen, anyone?). It's now our turn to help Barb and Spike stay away from the dangers of the roadside, where they're lured by discarded rubbish and leftover food. Please put it in the bin or take it home. Share with your friends and family, or tag someone who needs to see this! #GBSpringClean

The Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, recently opened our business engagement conference and spoke about the shared responsibility of drivers to reduce road risk. We caught up with her after the event: “It was great to be at the Work-Related Road Risk Conference. Road safety is a responsibility we all share, and I’m pleased to see so many people across the industry and Government who are committed to making our roads safer. The UK already has some of the safest roads in the world, but we need to continue working hard to make our roads even safer, especially when so many people drive to and for work everyday.” Our free programme Driving for Better Business is available to any business or employer to reduce their work-related risk and improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability. As well as helping businesses save money through lower fuel costs, lower insurance premiums and reduced maintenance costs.

  • We're proud to support Keep Britain Tidy's annual Great British Spring Clean. Litter clearance is a year-round challenge for us. Our teams collect litter daily, and we've mobilised volunteers across the country to join this important national effort. We're also focused on influencing behaviours to prevent littering in the first place through targeted campaigns and partnerships. Last night, our CEO Nick Harris joined one of our teams on the M3 in Surrey carrying out maintenance work on the road to keep it safe and at the same time ensuring it’s clean and tidy. Vital work like this requires lane closures that can cause delays and put the safety of our people at risk whilst they work near live traffic. Every piece of litter is an unnecessary and avoidable hazard. We're also addressing another significant issue: discarded traffic management equipment – signs, A-frames, cones and sandbags left behind after roadworks. We have recovered substantial amounts of abandoned equipment. Whether it's ensuring your organisation properly manages its equipment, volunteering for a litter pick, or simply disposing of your own waste responsibly – every action counts. What steps are you taking to keep Britain tidy? #GBSpringClean

  • 🚧Final closure 🚧 🚧Avoid the M25 from 21-24 March due to large scale demolition work taking out existing bridges, and for maintenance to the concrete stretch between junctions 10 and 11 ⚠️ 🚧 The closure will start at 9pm on Friday evening, and be lifted by 6am on Monday morning.

  • Our on-road teams need vehicles that are reliable, versatile and capable of dealing with the safety-critical work they carry out to operate our road network. At the same time, we have a commitment to achieve net zero and influence more environmentally sustainable behaviour across our organisation, supply chain and road users. As of this year, 96.7% of our 'light fleet' is ultra-low or zero emission. This includes: ➡️ 112 pool vehicles ➡️ 160 Road Inspector vehicles ➡️ 355 Traffic Officer vehicles
