What a fantastic session at the latest monthly meet of our Spinout Leaders' Network earlier this week, looking at The Four Foundations of Effective Marketing with Bryony Thomas. Our academic founders and executive leaders of spinout businesses benefitted hugely from this session and Bryony's engaging style will certainly help the key messages stick safely in our memories! (We've likened things to herding cats before... but now we're firmly focussed on stealing cats!) It's great to see the network increasingly supporting each other and beginning to share connections and lessons, as well as of course learning from our fantastic line-up of speakers at our monthly events. We're honoured to be able to provide this level of support as the spinout community continues to grow in the North East and beyond. #researchcommercialisation #spinoutleadersnetwork #northeastinnovation #northeastspinouts #networking Larry Roberts Professor Richard Crisp PhD FAcSS Charles Fernyhough Jase Smith • Dale Athey Steph Addison Rebecca Wilson James Stockdale Natalie Young, PhD Jonathan Brookes

Fantastic news Low Carbon Materials (LCM)
🏆 Low Carbon Materials are extremely proud to have been awarded the Highways UK Excellence StartUp of the Year Award 2024! 🚧 We have been recognised for our innovative work in decarbonising construction with our drop-in material solutions. 🌐 We are passionate about developing low-carbon and environmentally friendly construction materials. ♻️ Our innovative products, ACLA® and OSTO®, are carbon-negative aggregates which can be incorporated into asphalt and concrete respectively to transform their carbon footprint. ✅ Used in several large-scale projects across the UK, every tonne of ACLA® used has permanently sequestered ~800 kg CO2e from the atmosphere! 🚗 That is an equivalent carbon saving of 2046 miles driven in the average gas-powered car. 🚀 We are excited to continue collaborating on projects across the UK to advance sustainable practices within construction, developing technology we believe will pave the way towards net zero. A great day at EconFest at Darlington Economic Campus ~ thank you for the great opportunity to share our work supporting the creation of, and growth of, university spinout businesses across the North East and North Yorkshire
👨🏫 EconFest Day 2: Economics, Business and Health 💹 🤝 👩⚕️ The second day of EconFest at the Darlington Economic Campus has been even more jam-packed than the first with a keynote from a bestselling author, talks from two local universities, a book and bake sale, multiple bitesize sessions and a coding workshop. Here are some of the highlights: 🛌 Bitesize Economics: Money under the mattress? Ben Russell took us through the pros and cons of the 'mattress method' for saving money and in the process explained the role of inflation, compound interest and insurance markets in everyday life. 💵 Keynote: Economics for Non-economists Rupal Patel Senior Economist at the Bank of England and best-selling author of 'Why Can't We Just Print More Money' was joined by DBT's Rachel Johnson to discuss what economics can teach us about everything from QE to carbon pricing. 📈 Deep Dive: The Economics of SME Support Keirra Smith led a great session on the business support programmes of DBT and Durham University and the potential for mutual learning and collaboration. Dominic J. and Joanna Crellin presented on the work of DBT followed by Richard Baker, Edwin Milligan, Chris H. and Natalie Craig sharing their work and projects at Durham University. 🛫 Bitesize Economics: Price Discrimination I introduced the topic of price discrimination by asking why certain airlines charge you to choose your seat and why freddos now come in multipacks... 📚 🤝 🍰 Book & Bake Sale: EconFest Edition We had a special deal at lunchtime where for £5 anyone could get an economics book and a homemade bake. In the process we raised over £150 for our two Darlington-based charities that DEC supports (Little SENDsations and Samaritans). 👩⚕️ Deep Dive: The Economics of Health Jalal Yousif and Chris lles from HMT's Health and Social Care Team chaired a session on health with Professor Susan Griffin from the University of York. Susan took us through a crash course in the economics of health and the breadth of the Centre for Health Economics' research on a vast range of topics. 👨💻 Skills Workshop: Coding for Beginners Luke, Ellen, Patricia and Matthew led an interactive workshop taking colleagues through the basics of coding in R and the innumerable ways their newfound knowledge can be put to use. Today demonstrated the breadth of ways that economics can be put to use from improving health and business outcomes to tackling climate change and saving you money on your next flight. Looking forward to another full day tomorrow with a few special guests... 👀

Congratulations on this huge milestone AMLo Biosciences So much hard work has gone into this journey so far, to ensure that crucial research and discoveries lead directly to improved patient outcomes in the UK and beyond. We continue to watch your spinout journey in awe Marie Labus and team!
*NEWS* AMLo Biosciences announces this week that our prognostic melanoma biomarker #AMBLor that accurately identifies early-stage melanomas at low risk of progression, successfully received its #UKCA mark and is now available to healthcare professionals. Dr Marie Labus, CEO, AMLo Biosciences said, “We are excited that AMBLor is available to the NHS and private hospitals. With only around 20% of early stage I or II melanomas progressing to metastatic disease, it is important to identify this group of patients that can be spared further invasive tests and lengthy follow-up schedules. This will free up much-needed healthcare resources and help alleviate NHS waiting lists for skin cancer treatment.” Read the full press release: https://bit.ly/479VHJK #dermatology #dermatopathology #histopathology #histology #oncology #skincancer #cancerresearch #biomarkers #prognostics #healthinvestment #melanoma
