It is World Water Day, we felt it important to highlight the work we do to support our environment. This year’s theme is glacier preservation and with 1 in 10 people not having clean water and climate change making it worse, the important balance between environment and clean water has never been more crucial. Here we explain how we can all play a part in the future of the world’s water supply.

Working in partnership with businesses across the region is always interesting...but this job was something totally different! We are proud to be working closely with The Glasshouse to ensure that we are doing things in the most water efficient way possible! We recently carried out a water audit in the iconic Quayside building, checking every water point to find ways to use less and protect supplies. Find out more, here 👇

You've heard of power from poo....but catching flights from faeces? We are incredibly proud to share that work has started on a world-first project which will see poo turned into fuel for aircraft ✈️ Our team of research experts are currently developing the ground-breaking project, which will transform algae grown in domestic sewage into sustainable aviation fuel. The incredibly innovative “Green Machine” will see experts using algae to extract nitrogen and phosphorous from wastewater, recover it and then convert it into sustainable fuels. The project, which has involved a £6.5m investment, will help to reduce environmental impacts of waste treatment and will save up to £1m per year in operational costs. We are working with partners at American-based company, Brightwave, and filtration experts at Liqoflux. Here's Matt to tell you more! ⬇️ Or, read the full story here - https://lnkd.in/e2SszBFh

A novel approach to improve river water quality Organisations from across the South Tyne area have been brought together by 22 projects to improve the local environment and river health in local communities. ‘The South Tyne Holistic Water Management Project’ started in April 2020, partly in response to flooding experienced by downstream Tyne communities during extreme weather, and partly to address fine sediment in river water which was affecting water pumps near to Ovingham. The project, led by Northumbrian Water, has included many different schemes from scientific studies to find the biggest sources of fine sediment, to ‘slow-the-flow’ schemes, all the way to full-scale river restoration all with the aim of improving the health of the River Tyne. Protecting water supply Refurbishment of equipment at one of our water treatment works (WTW) will help to protect the quality and resilience of water supply for thousands of our customers. We’ve invested £3m in the work at Warkworth WTW in Northumberland, which directly supplies more than 15,000 customers and supports the supply for thousands more. With our partners, Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB, we’ve refurbished four clarifiers – which remove sediment and other impurities from the raw water at the start of the treatment process. As well as protecting the quality and resilience of water supplied from the site, it will increase the amount of water the WTW can produce. The work is the first of two related investments, with enhancements to the connected water network being planned. Pic taken midway through the work

We’re honoured to see the teams behind investments we are making for our customers and communities being recognised in the shortlists for the prestigious ICE North East Robert Stephenson Awards (RSAs). The RSAs are landmark awards for civil engineers here in the North East and, along with our partners who are delivering the investment, we know that this recognition is a reflection of all the hard work that goes into these projects. In the Large Projects category, our £11m investment in sewer network upgrades in the Pity Me, Plawsworth and Brasside area, delivered by Esh-Stantec (Esh Group Stantec), has been shortlisted alongside our £53m project to build a brand new treated water reservoir and related pipework at Springwell, Gateshead, where we are working with Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB. The shortlist for the Medium Projects award includes a £3m investment in safety and resilience at Tunstall Reservoir, in Weardale, delivered by Esh-Stantec, and £3.5m of upgrades at Wark STW in Northumberland, which is being carried out by Mott MacDonald Bentley. Good luck to everyone shortlisted.

Last week, we told you about the completion of our £11m project to upgrade our sewer network and protect the environment in County Durham. The investment in the Plawsworth, Pity Me and Brasside area included the creation of a new 6km pipeline, which crossed not only the busy A167, but also the East Coast Main Line. To avoid disrupting those important transport routes, we worked with our partners, Esh-Stantec, and specialist drilling firms, to pass beneath the road and rail networks. Once an innovative method of working, such drilling techniques are a regular part of our engineering on projects like this, helping to keep our essential services, and traffic, flowing.
Job completion ✅ A new 6km pipeline has been constructed as part of the Durham Transfers scheme which has been delivered by Esh-Stantec on behalf of NWG (Northumbrian Water Group). Recently we caught up with Esh-Stantec’s Contracts Manager, Scott Jackson, and NWG’s Project Manager, Paul Davison, to find out more about the work that has been completed on the 18-month project and how important the project is to the wastewater network. Learn more about what they had to say 👇
