Building a better future for our customers, region and planet 💧

About us

We are the UK’s biggest water and sewerage company with around 15 million customers across London and the Thames Valley. You would be joining a company with an amazing history and an exciting future. We provide clean and take away waste water for almost 25 per cent of the UK population every day – that’s more than 11,000 Olympic size swimming pools worth of clean water and 16,000 pools of waste. We will not compromise on standards which is why we carry out more than 400,000 tests per year on our drinking water. We continue to invest and this year will be spending more than £1 billion to improve our networks and infrastructure – our pipes, sewerage treatment and clean water treatment plants, which are some of the biggest and most advanced sites in Europe. And we will spend the same again next year in our challenge to make sure that if our customers had a choice, they would choose Thames Water. Planning for the future is a key part of our strategy and we already generate enough electricity to power more than 55,000 homes. We also understand the importance of speaking to our youngest customers through our sustainability and education programs in schools and effectively manage and maintain a number of nature reserves. Above all this, Thames Water values its staff as number one and we can now look forward to welcoming you to our team.

  • After ten years of construction, the last of 21 connections has been made between the original Victorian sewers and the new 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel, bringing the entire system online to protect the tidal Thames from sewage pollution.   This final connection is a major milestone in a three-stage infrastructure project to help London's wastewater system cope with a growing population and the impact of climate change.   This £4.5 billion project will reduce sewage overflows into the Thames by as much as 95% and have lasting benefits for biodiversity, recreation and public health.   We know there’s much more to do to protect our rivers, so our focus now turns to what’s next. For the last six months, Brinkworth Productions has been filming a two-part ‘fly on the wall’ documentary around our sites. After filming hundreds of hours of footage with hundreds of our colleagues, the first episode will air tonight on BBC2 at 9pm. We’ve taken part in this documentary to show you the Thames Water behind the headlines. Colleagues at all levels across the business are working to deliver the service our customers deserve and secure the funding we need to achieve our turnaround plan. Tune in and you’ll see us be very open about where we are today and the challenges we’re facing for the future. We’d like to say a big thank you to our teams for welcoming the cameras and being open about where we are as a business and the work we’re doing to turn things around. To watch the first episode of Thames Water: Inside the Crisis, switch on BBC2 tonight at 9pm. The second episode airs at the same time tomorrow. https://lnkd.in/dMSZm875

  • We're pleased that the Court of Appeal has today upheld the High Court's decision to sanction our financial restructuring plan to extend our liquidity runway by up to £3 billion. This is a bridge towards the future. Our focus remains on securing new equity to support the delivery of our ambitious PR24 business plan, turning around our performance and putting our business onto a more stable financial foundation for the long-term.   Today's news demonstrates further progress. We can continue with our planned investment and maintenance of our infrastructure in order to continue to meet our customers’ needs and our environmental responsibilities.   It's important to say that our customers will not be paying for this liquidity extension and it won't impact their bills. It will provide continued investment in our network to fix pipes, upgrade our sewage treatment works, and maintain high-quality drinking water.

Our customers care deeply about keeping rivers healthy. We care too. Today marks the next big step in our efforts after the connection of the Thames Tideway Tunnel: a £1.8 billion investment between 2025-2030 to improve river health across London. Where will the money go? We're focusing investment on the tributaries of the Thames, including: Roding, Wandle, Lee and Brent What difference will it make? Programmes will include: > Reducing discharges from 26 sewage overflows to make waterways cleaner and healthier > Renewing pressurised sewers known as rising mains to reduce the risk of pollution affecting streams and rivers in the capital > Five more years of funding for our Outfall Safaris partnership with Zoological Society of London (ZSL) to reduce pollutions on >45 watercourses to the north and south of the Thames > A brand-new £20 million River Health & Community Fund to support local environmental and community groups   And we haven't forgotten about rivers in the Thames Valley and Home Counties... more to come on that soon! • One of our projects shortlisted for Ofwat’s Innovation Fund includes an investment of almost £1.5m to offer communities better ways to dispose of kitchen fats, oils and grease (FOG). FOGs cause major disruptions across towns and cities each year. The blockages and fatbergs they create quickly clog up our sewers and cause backups in homes and local businesses, creating urban pollution and environmental nightmares.  So it’s vital that we do all we can to tackle the problem. If we’re successful with funding, we’ll partner with local councils and recyclers to create new routes for FOG collection – helping us reduce the strain on sewer systems and avoid future disruption due to blockages. • In honour of International Women’s Day #IWD on Saturday, our Head of Scheme Development Georgina Seely has been reflecting on her career as a female engineer in the water industry and sharing her advice for up-and-coming engineers.   Recent statistics from Engineering UK show that the proportion of women working in engineering and technology has dropped to just 15.7%. We want to tackle this with equal opportunities for everyone.   It’s an exciting and busy time for the water sector, as we’re planning record investment in projects that will benefit millions of people – so now’s the perfect time to join.   Read Georgina’s full blog at https://lnkd.in/eaKtVKUY

Over the past five years, we’ve invested £20 million to make our sewers smarter and prevent flooding and pollution. Since installing 20,000 new monitors across our region, we’ve found and cleared an extra 11,500 blocked pipes caused by things like wet wipes and cooking oil. We’re planning to install another 31,000 monitors by 2030. This is just one example of how using the latest data and technology can drive change and improve our service for customers.    Anna Boyles, Head of Environmental Performance at Thames Water, says: "We’re always looking at how we can use data and digital technology to improve the way we work and reduce the impact on our customers and the environment. Our smart sewer network is a major step forward in preventing blockages before they happen, and we’re committed to expanding this work over the coming years."
