We know how important it is to provide great quality drinking water, from Carlisle to Crewe we have a dedicated Water Quality Maintenance Team inspecting the regions water assets, such as this contact tank in Wirral! Our teams drained this tank to carry out a strict inspection, checking for ingress and leaks, carrying out a wide range of repairs to ensure the protection of the regions water quality before moving onto the next site. As a part of our commitment to the Drinking Water Inspectorate, we will continue to inspect, remediate and clean all our water assets within a 7 year cyclic programme, ensuring drinking water at home stays in tip-top condition. See for yourself! We recently opened our doors to the public at Davyhulme Wastewater Treatment Works to host a guided tour of the site, where local residents had the opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes when you flush the loo. Our customers stepped into a treatment works enriched in history as the process of treating wastewater was created on site at Davyhulme just over 100 years ago! They had the chance to learn about the whole treatment process and ask us any questions about our work. Thanks to everyone who came along, we hope to welcome more local faces onto our site in the near future! #Davyhulme #Wastewater #GreaterManchester #Treatment #UnitedUtilities #WaterfortheNorthWest #History #Innovation

It’s International Day of Action for Rivers and we're reflecting on our award-winning work to restore habitats in Cumbria. Around 200 years ago, a river in Swindale Valley was straightened to increase the amount of farmland and flow of water through the valley. We saw a negative impact on the natural environment with an increase in downstream flood risk and reduced biodiversity. In an exciting project to benefit water quality, wildlife and people, we worked closely with the RSPB, the Environment Agency and Natural England to return Swindale Beck to its original bendy course. The benefits were seen immediately with an increase in wildlife biodiversity and improved water quality. The Cumbria River Restoration Programme will be submitted to the International River Prize, with winners announced later this year. #Actiononrivers #Riverhealth #SwindaleBeck #LakeDistrict #Cumbria #Haweswater #Wildlife #Biodiversity #RiverPrize #WaterQuality

We’re celebrating #InternationalWomensDay. With a workforce of over 2,000 women, we understand the importance of supporting our peers and celebrating their goals and achievements. We also recognise the value of inspiring future generations of women. That’s why we invited a group of local high school students to our headquarters in Warrington. Our aim was to offer valuable guidance on navigating their career paths, highlighting how they could thrive in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) career opportunities. Students then participated in a ‘speed mentoring’ session, rotating around the room to meet with various employees, including scientists and engineers, before tackling a real-world problem and brainstorming potential solutions. It was a fantastic way to kick off #BritishScienceWeek, offering a positive and inspiring experience for the next generation of women in STEM. #womensday #femaleworkforce #inclusive #womeninstem #stemcareers #stem #stemcareer #internationalwomensday2025

In partnership with Mersey Rivers Trust and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Region, we’ve announced a landmark agreement to help deliver national water quality goals and accelerate the clean up of the River Mersey, backed by Mayor Steve Rotherham. The agreement consists of a five-year action plan, aimed at reducing sewage discharges, improve water quality and boost biodiversity across the Liverpool City Region. The five-year pipeline of projects aligns with the Government’s Plan for the Water Sector, and will explore innovative nature-based solutions, such as sustainable drainage systems and natural flood management techniques to reduce pressure on the sewer network, cutting the risk of overflows. https://lnkd.in/epqVWabc #merseyside #waterquality #floodmanagement #rivermersey #innovation #sewernetwork #biodiversity

A primary school in Cumbria has received a welcome boost to their beach clean-up efforts, thanks to a donation from our Community Fund. Haverigg Primary School was presented with brand-new equipment to help continue their vital clean-up work and to help the students learn more about protecting water quality. Pupils and teachers met with our River Rangers to undertake a beach clean to help the school with its efforts of becoming more eco-friendly, and understanding more about local waterways, whilst helping to keep Haverigg Beach free from litter. A takeaway in Cheshire has installed a grease trap after experiencing a major blockage outside their business, caused by fats, oils and grease (FOG) being poured down the sink. Blockages can cause sewer flooding, which can lead to huge repair costs. After our team resolved the issue, the owners decided to install a fat trap to avoid any further blockages. Since then, they have been pleased to see the amount of FOG that has been prevented from reaching the drains. “If the trap wasn’t there, all that grease would be going down the drain. We’d end up spending a lot of money on unblocking it, and we’d have to close our business to do it, which is the last thing we need.” To learn more about FOG traps and how they can benefit your home or business, visit: https://lnkd.in/d25jU47K #fattrap #fatdisposal #fog #blockages #blockage #sewer #sewerflooding #prevention #prevent #fats

Today we can reveal we’ve seen a reduction in storm overflow spills across Windermere and the North West: https://lnkd.in/gp3QZNz7 The official figures, which will be released by the Environment Agency later this month, are expected to confirm a 28% reduction in spill duration in the Windermere catchment and a 31% reduction in spill duration across the North West. We’re embarking on the largest investment programme in 100 years which will see an overhaul of the region’s sewer network and early interventions are already bringing positive results. In Windermere alone we’re investing £200 million to reduce spills from storm overflows and have already commissioned an additional 2.6 million litres of storage across Ambleside and Windermere to improve water quality. A new landscape recovery scheme will aim to rejuvenate almost 7,000 hectares allowing nature in Lancashire to flourish whilst supporting the people who live, work, farm and visit the area. We’ve joined up with Lancashire Wildlife Trust and other partners to develop a long-term plan for how to care for the environment. Improving the catchment land around our reservoirs not only helps improve the biodiversity of the area but also improves raw water quality, which reduces treatment costs for our valued customers. A series of public events will be held to give people the opportunity to have their say: https://lnkd.in/eHEJ45CH #lancashire #partnership #landscape #environment #biodiversity #waterquality
