The NQCC welcomes the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's publication in response to the Regulatory Horizons Council (RHC) review of quantum technology applications. The policy paper sets out the UK’s approach to quantum regulation, aligned with the RHC’s recommendations. It emphasises the importance of a proportionate, timely, and forward-looking approach, enabled by collaboration, evidence-building, and increased regulatory capability. The NQCC is pleased that our activities are recognised in the paper as supporting these efforts, including through providing technical expertise and upskilling, and convening the Responsible Quantum Industry Forum, along with techUK and UKQuantum. We look forward to continuing our work with partners across the National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP) and beyond to build a safe, responsible and trusted ecosystem, enabled by pro-innovation regulation. https://lnkd.in/eDE8ZqHx #quantum #quantumcomputing #regulation #responsibleinnovation #responsiblequantumindustryforum #NQTP

Catalysing Quantum Readiness
About us
The NQCC is a new research institution funded through UKRI, which is dedicated to accelerating the development of quantum computing by addressing the challenges of scalability. Working with partners across industry, government and the research community, the NQCC will create the necessary R&D capabilities through coordination and delivery of a technical programme, alongside the commissioning and operation of new facilities. The programme will deliver assured quantum computing capability, enabling the UK to remain internationally competitive. The centre will be headquartered in a purpose-built facility at the STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Campus in Oxfordshire, which is due for completion in 2023.

We are pleased to announce that the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) and Nu Quantum have launched Project IDRA – the first phase in building an innovative optically connected, multi-node distributed quantum computing system, to be based at the NQCC’s facilities in Harwell, Oxfordshire. The project aims to overcome scientific roadblocks to scaling quantum computers, placing the UK in a world-leading position. IDRA is funded by the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF) and supported by NQCC through project co-location, access to specialist equipment and technical collaboration. Project IDRA focuses on networking quantum processing units (QPUs) to achieve scalable quantum computing. The project aims to overcome key technical risks limiting distributed quantum processors by creating entanglement between qubits in different QPUs, thus enabling them to perform complex computations as a single, more powerful system. Nu Quantum will develop a complete distributed quantum processor system, comprising high-efficiency qubit-photon interfaces and high-fidelity Quantum Networking Units (QNUs). These innovations will be tested at Harwell in collaboration with the NQCC. https://lnkd.in/e6sdCMM6 UK Research and Innovation EPSRC STFC Quantum Software Lab Nu Quantum #quantumcomputing #quantum #quantumcommunity #quantumnetworking #research #quantumcollaboration #quantumtechnologies #innovation #computing
Today, we finally announce Project IDRA between Nu Quantum and the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) ⚛ This is the first phase of a 4-year project to build a pioneering multi-node distributed quantum computing system - directly addressing one of the biggest challenges in the industry: scaling. This project marks the beginning of a new scaling paradigm for quantum computing - from monolithic to distributed - enabled by weaving together modular & efficient QPUs using entanglement networks. Earlier in the year we also opened an additional office in Harwell, Oxfordshire, right next to the NQCC facility. Keep your eyes peeled because we will be hiring very soon for QC Systems experts to join our fantastic Harwell team (pic attached!) building the world's first industrial distributed quantum systems. Big thank you to the team at National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) and to Michael Cuthbert for your continued vision and support in moving the field forward. NQCC featured in The Sunday Times Magazine: ‘What is Quantum Computing?’ In a feature article by The Sunday Times Magazine, quantum computing is acknowledged as the giant technological leap that could help solve humanity’s most pressing problems. As the article highlights, there’s a mix of excitement and skepticism surrounding the quantum revolution, but the UK is backing the potential it holds, including investing through the National Quantum Computing Centre. The NQCC’s main facility and headquarters is soon to open at Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire officially. While speaking to the Times Science Editor Ben Spencer, Dr Simon Plant, Deputy Director for Innovation, emphasised the NQCC's goal: "Our vision is to address some of the most complex challenges that face society by harnessing the potential of quantum computing." With 12 quantum computers in development, eight from private companies and four from staff scientists, to be hosted on-site, the NQCC’s initiatives are playing a pivotal role in supporting the delivery of the UK’s national quantum strategy. Dr Plant discussed the opportunities and challenges of delivering this emerging technology and how the NQCC as a national lab is already playing its role through research, innovation, and user engagement. He emphasised the uniqueness of the UK’s approach to building and hosting such a range of quantum computers at a central location, supporting the growth of an emergent cluster. Research from ARC | Advanced Research Clusters shows that just under half of people who work in laboratory settings identify as neurodivergent, with more than a quarter identifying as autistic, 25 times the national average. Despite this, labs frequently exacerbated symptoms, with neurodiverse employees reporting “over-stimulation” as a common side-effect of things such as poor-quality lighting, overcrowding and workspaces that are too noisy. Hannah Prevett spoke to Daisy S. who left her role as a researcher at the Advanced Technology Institute at the University of Surrey, and is now an outreach and engagement officer at the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC). https://lnkd.in/eDqF6Z3n #labs #scientists #neurodivergent #autism #wetlabs #tech
