The voice of the civil nuclear industry in the UK - #NetZeroNeedsNuclear

About us

The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) is the trade association for the civil nuclear industry in the UK. It represents more than 250 companies across the UK’s nuclear supply chain. The diversity of NIA membership enables effective and constructive industry-wide interaction. NIA member companies have significant expertise in nuclear decommissioning and clean-up, with 18 nuclear sites in the UK currently being managed through the process. We believe nuclear energy is essential to meet the UK’s clean energy needs. Together with renewables and energy efficiency, nuclear can reduce carbon emissions. As part of a diversified energy mix, nuclear-generated energy provides safe and reliable electricity for UK homes, hospitals, schools and industries.

  • Last week the Nuclear Industry Association held a Legal & Financial Business Group meeting ⚛️🤝 NIA members discussed the challenges surrounding financing and legal frameworks within the nuclear sector. We explored solutions for private financing of new nuclear projects, including how the Regulated Asset Base (RAB) model can reduce investor risk and lower financing costs. There were insightful panel discussions from Rolls-Royce SMR, Holtec Britain, X-energy, and newcleo on financial support for large-scale reactors, SMRs, and AMRs. The group also explored the Civil Nuclear Roadmap and discussed how UK regulations can be streamlined alongside the new government approach to nuclear. Thank you to everyone who attended, and a special thanks to Maisie Ross for helping organise and to Deloitte for hosting. • It was great to see Lord Hunt, Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, visit Urenco’s Capenhurst site! 👏⚡ The facility is the largest exporter in the UK #nuclear sector providing vital #fuel for our allies to enhance energy security. Supporting Urenco's work means more #nuclear jobs in the UK and a healthier nuclear #supplychain. #nuclearfuel #netzeroneedsnuclear

We were honored to welcome the Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, Lord Hunt, to our Capenhurst site on Wednesday (2 October). His visit provided an excellent opportunity to highlight our contribution to the #nuclearfuel supply chain and our key role in supporting new #nuclear initiatives in the UK, as well as the UK Government’s mission to become a clean energy superpower by 2030. On his visit, Lord Hunt toured our flagship enrichment plant, E23, as well as the site of the UK’s HALEU facility, which is being supported by £196 million of UK Government co-investment. Discussions centered around the UK’s commitment to enhancing domestic fuel cycle capabilities, benefiting not only the UK but also its global allies, while driving innovation and research. The Minister also met with a group of Urenco apprentices, who spoke about their aspirations for the future. #Nuclearenergy will play a pivotal role in achieving a #sustainable and secure energy landscape and is bringing us one step closer to achieving #netzero.

  • 'Instead of replacing coal power stations with new cleaner technologies like nuclear, many remain untouched, just big old hulks and relics of a bygone era. To leave them like that would be a terrible waste.' ✍ The Nuclear Industry Association's Iolo James on the huge potential for jobs, investment and clean power generation if the UK redeveloped former coal power sites into new nuclear sites. #nuclear #coal #Aberthaw #nezeroneedsnuclear

‘We should have been replacing dirty baseload coal a long time ago, not with fossil gas like we have been doing, but instead with the only clean source of baseload power we have: nuclear.' ✍ My thoughts after a recent trip to Aberthaw, a former coal power station, on the merits of a national coal-to-nuclear programme to bring back jobs, investment and opportunity to communities who can make the energy transition work. #nuclear #coal #netzeroneedsnuclear #Aberthaw

September is always a busy month - the return from holidays, Parliament and government getting back into gear and the political party conference season - this year even moreso with new MPs and a new government of new Ministers here in the UK, along with the international events in nuclear that happen at home and abroad during the month. But it was back home where the first of these took place, on the first Monday of the new term in Portcullis House, Westminster. Led by Josh MacAlister MP and his fellow Cumbrian MPs Markus Campbell-Savours MP and Julie Minns, many of the stakeholders and interested parties in taking forward nuclear ambitions in west Cumbria were convened for the initial meeting of the Nuclear Delivery Group for Cumbria. The Nuclear Industry Association is pleased to participate on behalf of our member companies in the supply chain, both in relation to the ongoing work at Sellafield and across the NDA estate, but also in relation to potential new nuclear capacity that we know is needed being a part of the next chapter of Cumbria’s nuclear story. There are complexities and challenges in ensuring one does not compromise the other, but it is a good approach to get all of the participants, proponents and interested parties together to work through the issues - it is exactly what the industry wants to see from those representing our host communities in Parliament. You can read Josh McAllister’s take on this from his recent column in The Whitehaven News https://lnkd.in/eC9qkupk
